Well said Celeste.

MikeChristine    As  a person who goes for counseling at one of the "mental places" that really hurts. I have had anxiety and
depression most of my life and really need to understand your statement.

Mike Christine

You are only a stones throw away from being there.  All it takes is a massive hit in your life and Major Depression will send you spirialing.  Most likely it will come because of something financially related loss of job, home, kids getting into trouble. No place to stay.  You become financially strapped and have to go on Medicaid to attend to yours and you famly's health needs like using that Mental Place for therapy andmedications.

Do you know how many of those men are Vets? The Major Depression, hopeless, helpless overwhelms them.  The PTSD horrofies their every waking moment.

Thank God you still have a job, a home, your kids are doing ok and you are not a Vet just coming home.

You might want to think about offering an apology to all the Vets reading this board and all those who have lost their jobs, their houses reposessed..  Please.  You have just stigmatize a whole group of your neighbors. This is the reason many don't go for help...  the stigma.  It holds them back and many times leads to them taking their life.

Thanks
Celeste

Celeste, MC1 didn't say anything about Vets and from the people I have known from the YMCA, many are not Vets. The majority are addicts straight out of rehab and I'm not saying that to be mean, just from my experience.

The frustration in the City comes from the fact that Proctors is getting million dollar grants to run failed plays time and time again meanwhile the City gives millions to Galesi to build a brand new homeless shelter and DSS building. The abuse of the welfare system in Schenectady County is so rampant that the 'lifers' come here to collect. When was the last audit? Um...never!

As the middle class taxpayer, we are getting ripped off from the City, from for-profit businesses, from the 'charity' Proctors and from the abusers of the DSS revolving door.

Downtown is not crowded with people during the day (maybe that's because Proctors can't get free police protection at that time). Go to downtown Saratoga ANY time, day or night...that's progress, it's retail, it's restaurants and IT'S BUSINESSES THAT PAY SCHOOL AND PROPERTY TAX WHICH KEEP THE CITY ALIVE AND THRIVING!!!!!

I agree Morris is a con etc. and this city sure has it's priorities backwards and their is some serious questions on the process to build in downtown in regards to tax agreements but I can't ignore the stigmatizing statements made.  It causes much damage.

The damage done by statements such as the one MC1 about individuals who are homeless or go to the mental health clinic have a mental illness is extremely damaging.  The public needs to be called on statements like the one MC! presented. It is unfair and incorrect.  Is there a revolving door at DDS sure is.  There are stats now avialable showing our city residential base becoming one of maore foks up from the city, yes but to say they are all lowlifes, drug addicts or absentee fathers isn't fair either.

The damage done from stigma is seriously hurting those who are balking at getting treatment due to the stigma.  Please take a moment out to look closer at what I am asking of all viewing this board

I sincerely feel bad for anyone in the mental health system, yet I believe it's become a much more widely accepted practice than ever before.

My problem comes in when politicians like Spitzer cheat on their wives with taxpayer paid prostitutes and they're not arrested, they're 'sex addicts' and need rehab. The mental health system is being bastardized to suit purposes other than helping truly sick people. It's becoming a "get out of jail free" card for many a politico!

mental health and the labeling of such is dangerous for 'the system' to do.....very very very dangerous....

having an aversion to eating ie: anorexia is considered bad....but it's not hurting anyone else but the person with it.

when you go to the MD and get 'diagnosis' of depression is that mental health? does it affect what job you can apply for?

these are only small examples....

the big guns are schizophrenia/bipolar/split personality and the likes....

with national healthcare these will seriously be tracked....so be careful showing up to the MD or 'acting non-status quo'....

HIPPA/national healthcare is managed through IRS and your payroll companies......

connect the dots......

who are we to label mental health disease....a short time ago electric shock therapy was the rage and coming back to popularity

I personally would like to see the people with serious mental conditions get hospital care. Why should they have to wander the streets, getting into trouble? Abuses at "institutions" were used as an excuse to not be bothered with the care some people need. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest was a work of fiction.
Back to Proctor's, now it's the county that's in a Renaissance because of Proctor's? Is that because one of the city movers and shakers is sneaking away like a thief in the night, to the county? If Proctor's is leading the Renaissance, why was Mr. Cuthbert a "moron" for suggesting that the city should get abigger share of revenue? I know I've said this before, different ways, but you never know who is tuning in and getting with reality. A certain "leader" finally put two and two together and jumped ship. She's not fooling anyone except the very gullible, or those willfully ignorant. What a disgraceful exit, IMO.
Another point I would like to make - practically anyone would have been successful bringing in a show like Phantom of the Opera and not having to worry about making money. Large crowds don't prove a thing. A kid from the high school, taking some of those performing arts type classes, could have done it. When you see bad decisions that lose money, anybody can make mistakes, but that one was foreseeable, and it illustrates that maybe someone isn't deserving of all the accolades, as he is not all that he is cracked up to be.

you mean locked up hospital care? just because it looks bad to us doesn't mean they think their situation is bad. Don't project
your own dislike upon them. Being free is being free, no matter what a$$hole of a human being one may come into contact with.
Being locked up for 'safety and caring' is an oxymoron.

Society just can't tolerate the breech of status quo...hence the leaders we elect.

I think that they think their situation is bad when they seek help, don't get taken into care, and then hang themselves. Because we don't want to spend the money.

is that mental illness or someone making a choice because they know there is no permanent fix for their mind or maybe
they are just that distraught over something that NO OTHER HUMAN can understand/fix.

spend $$ on what? what fixes a fellow human's mind?

Yes rachel I agree

Certainly I wasn't trying to criticize Vets and really, they deserve something better than what the VA medical system does (but we have to remember that's government run).

Many, not all, of these mental health clinics seem operate to get the taxpayer money and really don't provide services.  Handing out some xanax or sitting and having a chat for an hour a week saying "how ya been this past week"  probably doesn't do much for the patients.  Even the Y (in Schenectady city anyway) has become largely a taxpayer subsidized place for males (who chose to drink and/or do drugs - doubtful anyone held a gun to their heads ordering them to drink til they were drunk, nor did they get tied up and have drugs injected into them til they were addicted).  And then again, not everyone with mental issues are like that.

There's an ample number of pandhandlers downtown and then the ones who must be seeing things that aren't there.  Some friends of ours used to go to the Bank of America down there, it's closer to where they live (Stockade) and they loathed exiting the bank (finally convinced them to go to another branch and use direct deposit).

But again, on Proctors and downtown, looking for anyone to prove some documentation to show how the people of the city have had their lives, finances, homes, and neighborhoods improved.   NO ONE, NOT EVEN THE CHEERLEADER DV WILL PROVIDE INFORMATION  - DETAILING THE ALLEGED IMPROVEMENTS (like showing the effect on the tax base, home values, improvements in neighborhoods, etc)

Optimists close their eyes and pretend problems are non existent.
Better to have open eyes, see the truths, acknowledge the negatives, and
speak up for the people rather than the politicos and their rich cronies.

Because there are no improvements. Funny you bring up Bank of America. The former branch on Nott St @Van Vranken is up for auction. Right across from Union College. Van
Vranken now has 2 empty restaurants, empty grocery and an empty bank. The same block that was featured in a renaissance puff piece in the Gazetto just 2 years ago. The City is heading for a State Control Board/bankruptcy. And these arts phonies led by Morris, Perazo and Johnson need to held accountable for their active participation. Tax Proctor's
now!

... evil nayboobs ... in their despicable but feeble attempts to undermine and tear down our beloved community.

Ah, you are talking about the community of the city of Schenectady, you use the term "our..."  But you REFUSE to live IN the community of the city of Schenectady that you claim is so beloved.

If it's so beloved, tell us why you REFUSE to LIVE IN it???????

Once again, TOTAL SILENCE.

You shouldn't be so hard on DVOR.

He has performed a great public service that we should all thank him for.

What public service has he performed to our benefit, you ask?

OK, I'll tell you.

He has made our community better by not reproducing.

I know, it wasn't really his choice, I mean, you know what he looks like.

Morris is a chicken that lays eggs.

We keep feeding him gold, but the eggs are always just rotten plain old eggs.
