My wife was shopping at Rotterdam Square. She was going over the sales receipt and them she saw it, 12%  . 8% sales tax and 4% local tax Rotterdam does it
again. Cheaper to shop else where and put that 4% in your pocket

Rotterdam doesn't have a 4% sales tax.

Total sales tax in Rotterdam is 8%.

The breakown is

4% county sales tax
4% state sales tax

Total is 8%

But clothing under roughly $100 the sales tax only 4% because there is no state sales tax.

Look at the receipt, do the math (especially if you have a mix of described clothing and other items).  If it's wrong, take the receipt to the store.   If it's right, call the store and tell them but ask why their registers print out like that (or call the main office if it's a chain store)

Better yet, contact Ch 6, maybe 10 and 13 too, someone will do a story on it.   Keep us posted.

not to long ago some companies were sued because they didn't have their computers set to the proper %.....

Went do to the store and they admitted that their computers were adding and extra 4%. They gave me the refund and since have fixed it. According to the store it
seemed to be only the 1 register.

A lot of mall stores have registers that don't comply with laws. I think it's because the kids working there part-time have no idea how they are supposed to work. A large number of boutiques at malls in general still have registers where you can't see the numbers as they ring up your purchases, and thathas been illegal for ages.

Actually that is not the law. But it is good practice. There is no law that you can't use a pen and paper, either and that would not show you on  a screen, anything.

And it is good practice to make sure your calculator or cash register computes the tax properly! It seems like someone set up a register to calculate incorrectly by accident in the original poster's post.

Go to a farm stand on the side of the road and see if the lady selling veggies has that kind of register. What a merchant needs to do is record their sales on a daily, weekly or monthly basis and provide a receipt that shows how much the mdse is and how much tax was collected. It can be on paper. Stores with high volumes find that using a register is much easier to keep track of sales. But there are businesses in retail that make 2 or 4 sales a day and there is no requirement for them to use a modern device that displays anything electronically to the customer at the counter.

I also would tell anyone that if something is incorrect, ask the manager to straighten it out before you call "the media" or "the state." It is usually an oversight or error that can be fixed, and it should be fixed right away.  Especially when a small business has part time help- mistakes can be made just like they can make mistakes at Walmart or at the government offices, or anywhere but in Heaven. There are no mistakes or errors in Heaven, but everywhere else they happen and it should not be a federal case.

I went to price chopper late one night and there was a display with a low price on it, so I grabbed a couple
boxes and went to the register. I rang up nearly double the price. When I questioned  it the cashier said
someone must have changed the signs around.

2 days later I returned and it was still the same.

I asked to see the store manager.

I told him what was going on and he said he would look into it.

Since that time I only go to price chopper if I can't get something anywhere else.

I believe these types of actions are deliberate.

You don't have to have one of those fancy registers, or a register at all. The ones that have a screen, they are supposed to have a screen that is visible to you as well, but some of them still don't. It's a county law in many places, and I believe Schenectady County has that rule as well, but try to find anything pertaining to city or county government in writing. Some businesses are objecting to enforcement of the county law in places like Westchester County, because their programs contain a lot of information that they don't want you to see that they are recording. People might get mad if they saw one of those CSI type CODIS displays come up when they were being checked out.

just a question.....is it good practice to bring stuff to ANY register ANY where and just hope the register is correct?

merchants have been allowed to become 'the tax collectors' for 'the tax man'.....

where is that tea party?

I'm not saying I pay that much attention to what the register says...I'm not a good little hamster shopper collecting coupons and
chasing sales, nor is shopping my American given obligation/hobby.....I hate shopping

the 'police' over the 'tax collectors' IS the 'tax man/state' who we accept as righteous....

I think it is more a question of caring or lack of, and incompetence. When I get super annoyed with a place, I go elsewhere. I usually give multiple chances too.

such a system prevents price as marked - it takes too much labor to individually price each item

life will cost more in January when the min wage goes to $8.00  -who else is getting a raise

sounds like most will get a pay cut  -and things will look even crappier
