ROTTERDAM — An allegedly drunken man knocked over a utility pole with his vehicle Saturday night, closing Hamburg Street for more than 12 hours, police said.
Joseph M. Peptis, who just turned 28, rammed a utility pole near the corner of East Campbell Road around 8:30 p.m., police said. He fled the scene of the crash on foot, cops said, but was arrested "a short distance" away.
Peptis charged with leaving the scene of an accident and felony-level DWI, as well as other traffic violations. He remains in the Schenectady County Jail.
An alert from the state's Department of Transportation indicated the road was not clear until 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
Also Saturday night, Rotterdam police charged Justin Gillespie for DWI after he crashed his car into a utility pole at the corner of Curry Road and Augustine Ave.
Police said Gillespie, 30, was inured in the crash and taken to Albany Medical Center Hospital, where he remains in stable condition.
Gillespie was charged with felony-level DWI, felony aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and several other traffic violations.
