Fracking study in Pa. says aquifer safe By Kevin Begos / The Associated Press on Sat, Jul 20, 2013 PITTSBURGH – A landmark federal study on hydraulic fracturing shows no evidence that chemicals from the natural gas drilling process moved up to contaminate drinking water aquifers at a western Pennsylvania drilling site, the Department of Energy told The Associated Press.
A year of monitoring found the chemical-laced fluids used to free gas trapped deep below the surface stayed thousands of feet below the shallower areas that supply drinking water, geologist Richard Hammack said.
Although the results are preliminary – the study is ongoing – they are a boost to a natural-gas industry that has fought complaints from environmental groups and property owners.
Drilling fluids tagged with unique markers were injected more than 8,000 feet below the surface but were not detected in a monitoring zone 3,000 feet higher. That means the substances stayed about a mile away from water supplies.
“This is good news,” said Duke University scientist Rob Jackson, who was not involved with the study. He called it a “useful and important approach” to monitoring fracking, but he cautioned that the single study doesn’t prove that fracking can’t pollute, since geology and industry practices vary widely.
The boom in gas drilling has led to tens of thousands of new wells being drilled in recent years, many in the Marcellus Shale formation that lies under parts of Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio and West Virginia. That’s led to major economic benefits but also fears that the chemicals used in the drilling process could spread to water supplies.

Fracking has been done for over 60 years, offshore drilling for over 80 years.

ONE study of ONE WELL has shown not to pollute. Since the geology is different in every well site, the results of this study don't necessarily relate to other wells. (As per the study)

This is just one of many SCIENTIFIC studies over the years that have reached the same conclusion. The pro-fracking side is based in science.
On the other hand, the anti-frackers rely on staged stunts and Hollywood movies to back up their positions. They have NO science on their side. And they refuse to acknowledge the Scientific studies that have proven them wrong .. over and over again.
Once again, the left wing nuts have no use for evidence. They just DEMAND that everyone unquestionably agree with their diagnosis and prescription on every issues.

A fracking well in USSR. Directional drilling occasionally does not go where it's supposed to go (thousands of feet underground). As in this case the crew got the 'direction' a little bit wrong. The video shows a drill bit that is supposed to be horizontally drilling far below the surface, and ends up ON THE SURFACE! OOPS!

Fracking is safe right? I mean, what could possibly go wrong???

Of course the left wing nuts will disregard the REAL science and the REAL evidence on this issue. There isn't just one study that proves that fracking is safe -- there have been many. But as with most issues, the left wing nuts defy REAL science and REAL evidence to push their distorted, deceitful agenda.

Natural gas isn't tied to the US dollar. Oil is tied to the dollar, through the petrol-dollar agreement Nixon signed with OPEC. If the market was flooded with natural gas, and nations bought natural gas as an alternative choice of energy, the dollar would collapse. The only thing keeping our economy from going into hyperinflation is the fact that the world MUST buy oil with US dollars. Anti fracking propaganda is to protect the dollar. Nothing more. Same reason there is little success with electric and hydrogen powered cars. Oil is the life blood of our economy, the more demand for oil, the more demand for dollars(essentially buying our debt). You try to trade your oil in something other than dollars, the US will crush you.(see Libya and now Iran/Syria)

There have been NO studies that have actually found that DEEP WELL fracking contaminates ground water. No evidence. The scientific method REQUIRES that there be some evidence to back up a theory or proposition. Since there is absolutely no evidence to prove that DEEP WELL fracking contaminates ground water than one logically has to say that the science shows that it does not. Science is on the side of the the pro-fracking community.

“We analyzed 141 drinking waterwells across the Appalachian Plateaus physiographic province of northeastern Pennsylvania, examining natural gas concentrations and isotopic signatures with proximity to shale gas wells. Methane was detected in 82% of drinking water samples, with average concentrations six times higher for homes” less than one kilometer from the fracked natural gas wells.
And what environmentalist extremist rag has the Duke study appeared in?
The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences … a peer reviewed journal, founded in 1915.
And Duke University is backing the research; as press release notes, “They found that, on average, methane concentrations were six times higher and ethane concentrations were 23 times higher at homes within a kilometer of a shale gas well. Propane was detected in 10 samples, all of them from homes within a kilometer of drilling.
“The methane, ethane and propane data, and new evidence from hydrocarbon and helium content, all suggest that drilling has affected some homeowners’ water,” said Robert B. Jackson, a professor of environmental sciences at Duke’s Nicholas School of the Environment. “In a minority of cases the gas even looks Marcellus-like, probably caused by poor well construction.” http://oilprice.com/Energy/Ene.....r-Contamination.html

They analysed 141 drinking wells across northern Pennsylvania, home to the Marcellus Shale Formation which extends into southern New York.
"Methane was detected in 82% of drinking water samples, with average concentration six times higher for homes less than one kilometre from gas wells … propane was detected in 10 water wells, all within approximately one kilometre."
"Ultimately, we need to understand why, in some cases, shale gas extraction contaminates groundwater and how to keep it from happening elsewhere."
This builds on work published in 2011 by Duke University researchers, which also found increased levels of hydrocarbons (which include methane and propane) in nearby drinking water. However, the university said at the time that: "Little research has been conducted on the health effects of drinking methane contaminated water."

The burden of proof is on the frackers, not the opposition.
There have been NO studies that have actually found that DEEP WELL fracking absolutely will not contaminates ground water.
Fracking is the process of drilling down into the earth before a high-pressure water mixture is directed at the rock to release the gas inside. Water, sand and chemicals are injected into the rock at high pressure which allows the gas to flow out to the head of the well.
How exactly does one inject chemical laced water into the ground without contaminating ground water?
Failure to find proof is sometimes simply incompetence, or bias.
