The guy they arrested was setting off his fireworks in the middle of the crowd at The Plaza, hurting several people.
He was charged with reckless endangerment, which is a far more serious charge than simple fireworks possession.

If the law says that it is illegal to possess fireworks, enforce it.  It is foolish to have a law on the books and not enforce it.

Its once a year and as long as the people do them safely I don't mind, I actually enjoy the shows put on around the neighborhood better then the professional shows. Sure you will have the idiots lighting off M-80s at 3:00 in the morning but usually it lasts from 9 to 12, its been that way for decades so it should be obvious when to really expect them. As posted by L4L fireworks are legal in 42 states and they seem to get by just fine, I guess the other states like our just don't trust the people or like them celebrating our independence, I wonder why.

You are bringing up a different issue -- should fireworks possession and use be illegal in our state?

As long as we have the law on the books saying that they are illegal than the law should be enforced.  Especially if the law enforcement agencies actually see the illegal activity happening and/or know exactly who is conducting the illegal activity.

If there is not a victim then there should be no crime, as said how will they enforce the thousands of people who were doing them. The police I hope had better things to do then to stop a few fireworks here and there, hopefully they actually stopped a crime with a victim, maybe like an assault or robbery. People need to just relax, go outside drink a beer and enjoy the show, no reason to screw up other peoples good time.

And again, enforce it how?

You obviously do not go into the city of Schenectady much ta all.   There are not enough cops on shifts in Schenectady to take care of the normal crimes that happen on a daily basis, and as it is, they have to call cops in on OT.

Now, if the existing staff cannot take care of the regular day to day crimes, DV, are you man enough to explain how cops can enforce the law about fireworks?

It's quite obvious you don't get out much and live an extremely sheltered life.  There are violations of the law much more serious than fireworks in the city (murders, robberies, shootings, stabbings, assaults, rapes, etc.), I trust you will post here that you acknowledge that this other stuff takes priority?

Police are already over 25% of your tax dollars.

We need to reduce this cost, not add more to it.

Millions, not thousands.

I doubt that it was millions or thousands of people doing illegal fireworks in Rotterdam and Schenectady.

The one illegal show in Rotterdam that has been going on every year for years lasts 20 to 30 minutes and is so blatantly obvious that ... well .. let's just say that it is NOT a question of law enforcement not knowing it is happening or who is putting it on.

DV leads a very sheltered life, much of what is said to him goes right over his head.   Talks about a show in town, guess he's too much of a chicken to use the stuff himself, obviously not adult enough.  Must be so jealous that he doesn't think others should be able to use them.

They are illegal in many cities though in states in which they are legal. Without having really looked into it, my guess is they tend to be illegal in highly populated area where they could easily start fires. A lot of the states where they are illegal have a lot of highly populated areas.

My neighbors down the road where shooting them off and one that was still flaming came down on my roof. I'd hate to think what could have happened if it where a drier year, if I had t noticed, etc.

People can blow their hands off if they want, but don't put my house in danger.

Your words were "millions not thousands" -- didn't specify where.

Bottomline, it doesn't make sense to have a law on the books if it is not going to be enforced, and there really is no good excuse why it is not enforced.  Personally, I think it is a good law.  I have seen the damage that illegal fireworks can do.  However if the police are not going to enforce it than the law should be repealed.

Do people who put on "legal" fireworks shows have to get a permit? That way I can call the city and find out when these things are
happening so I can tranquilize my dog.

Henry or whoever it was, it is NOT just once a year, it is many times a year, just in Sch'dy alone. Believe me, I suffer with my dog.

It is not a victimless crime either. Geez. As if that should make a difference.

What do you and your dog do during a thunderstorm? By the way what do you mean you tranquilize your dog Living in Schenectady I figured everyone here would be used to hearing bangs, not from fireworks of course
