Back to the thread - 70 cities in North America are either considering or building or have opened new trolley systems. Toronto and Vancouver have the jump start on us -- and of course New Orleans and San Francisco still have their old systems. Places like Seattle, Tucson, Atlanta, Salt Lake City and Fort Lauderdale are all hopping on the trolley. Schenectady and the Capital District should get on board as well.
Those cities, uh, DV, do you have a clue what their populations are? Like Schenectady has about 66,000.
Can you tell us who would pay for the trolleys?
Schenectady and Albany combined don't have the population that these other cities have individually.
Schenectady people CANNOT AFFORD MORE TAXES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When are you going to learn that?????? People in Schenectady are STRUGGLING FINANCIALLY.
Do you favor even more people losing their homes to pay for some stupid trolley?
Can you explain for us how a typical Schenectady family can pay for a home, utilities, food, clothes, medical, school supplies, car payment, homeowner insurance, medical insurance, auto insurance, city taxes, city fees, county taxes, school taxes, and then pay for your precious little UNNECESSARY trolley, with an income of the typical city household income under $40,000? You really have no clue how much things cost, do you!
Why don't you buy a trolley yourself and operate it WITHOUT TAXPAYER MONEY????
Optimists close their eyes and pretend problems are non existent. Better to have open eyes, see the truths, acknowledge the negatives, and speak up for the people rather than the politicos and their rich cronies.
Well anyway, some form of intra-urban trolley or light rail system would be a great thing for the Capital District.

Who do YOU think should pay for it? The taxpayers? Where do the taxpayers get money from?
Where are the trolleys going to go? Crossgates Mall? Colonie Center? Mohawk Commons?
You are LIVING IN THE PAST DV, Start looking at the present and future!!!!!!!!! People have families and cannot rely on some trolleys to get them to their destination. As you don't have a family nor a job, you have no sense of reality in the present day. Working people NEED to drive their own cars to work; when one's child is hurt at school, the parent NEEDS to get to school or hospital immediately and cannot wait until that bus that picks up at the end of the work day. Even local buses, parents CANNOT be spending two hours riding three buses to get home to their child. They MUST have cars with them at work; that's another reason people don't carpool. And for shopping, well, there's no way you can hold on two 20 bags of heavy groceries on a trolley or bus. We live in the present DV, we put our groceries in the car.

You make a good point, MC. None of the "planners" understand that for a parent, bringing your car to work is not a choice. If they hadn't made the cities so vile with misguided "planning" and social engineering, fewer people would have moved out, but even if you stayed, chances are you work elsewhere and have to commute. Also, the "trend" has quite obviously been to move jobs out to office parks, which are inaccessibleby mass transit but provide free parking lots. I don't like it, but it is what it is. How will the hypothetical people moving into New Fort Schenectady at the old Alco site get to work, and where will their jobs be? If it does happen, it will be a big boost to - GLENVILLE! That is where the will undoubtedly do their shopping.

You folks are the ones living in the past. CDTA is constantly studying and updating its routes and YES they do actually run buses to those office parks. So your argument that they are inaccessible to mass transit it b.s.
Now I see you are attacking the ALCO redevelopment project again --- you would be content to see it lay dormant and underutilized. You really need to set aside your bitterness and hatred aside, and start actually using some good judgement. Instead, you and the he/she monkey just jump up and down, stamping your feet and end up coming across like a bunch of fools.

No, the office parks were BUILT inaccessible to mass transit, like I said, and I never said that CDTA doesn't scramble to add service after the fact, but it is inadequate and does not meet the needs of working parents, as MC and I both have explained. That isn't the past, it is what is happening now. Here we go again, the ALCO site, whose fault is it that it is a big empty area? BS turned away BUSINESS proposals for that valuable industrial site, imagine that, jobs in the city, we can't have that. Half the city's housing rotting away, let's build more. Yep. Makes sense. Maybe the New Fort Schenectady residents will take a bus downtown to do their shopping. Golub must be planning another market nearby as we speak. Oh wait, he's not? Is that because he knows that this is a foolish concept, unlikely to succeed, and even if it did, he's got it covered, as he already has a store in GLENVILLE where, like I said, they will undoubtedly do their shopping? I suppose Golub is negative and hateful and foolish, as well, or does he spend good money on intelligent people to tell him what's what, so he doesn'tmake stupid mistakes? You see, he can't afford to go with "trends" as a basis for action, because it is his money and he is ultimately accountable to something.

First, the CDTA is an Authority that doesn't need to show a profit.
It is paid in full by the taxpayers and commuters.
Second, no one wants to see the stupid ALCO lands lay dormant.
They just object to the anti-Robin hood socialist, corporate welfare, elite being another deadbeat project breaking the back of the overburdened taxpayers.
You talk about Obama, but fail to recognize your own socialist/corporate welfare views.
Let private industry develop the property without entitlements.
Schenectady has become the corporate welfare capital of upstate NY.
Sure, a stupid trolley would be great. So would electric sidewalks and flying cars.
The reality is the city is maxed out in debt.
They need to stop spending and pay down the debt.
Give the taxpayers a fukking break.
Every new brainstorm turns into anther property tax increase, parking fee increase, trash fee increase, water bill increase, school tax increase, metroplex elite funding increase, with no end in sight.
You can't spend your way out of debt, little Obama.
Contrary to Obama statement that only the government can solve all your problems, it can't solve the problems because it is the problem.
Let's give the college a few more streets, let's give Proctor's a couple million more in grants and interest free loans to expand the empire.

DV, again, since you do not now, nor will ever, experience the overwhelming joy of being a parent, you also have no clue whatsoever of the responsibilities of being a parent.
Please explain, a TYPICAL situation. Child gets hurt or sick at school. A struggling person working at your favorite ShopRite store in Nisky and the child attends school at MP - an area you supposedly lived and know so much about. The parent receives a phone call at 11:10 a.m. at work that their child has been hurt at school. You claim bus service is oh so grand, you seem to know so much about how wonderful CDTA services is, obviously you take the buses frequently, so tell us what time the mother arrives at MP.
How about the parent is working at Hannaford in Niskayuna, it's a bitter cold day in January and the parent gets a phone call at 11:10 a.m. at work, has to get to MP middle school. You talk so grandly about CDTA, so I trust you can tell us what time the parent arrives at the school.
How about the parent who lives on Cheltingham Ave and works from home, and has a child at Pleasant Valley school, how does that parent get to the school during the day? You cheer for the taxpayer funded buses, it's the answer to everything, tell us how the parent gets to the school.
How about a parent who works at Walmart overnight on Route 50 in Glenville, tell us how that person gets home to the sitter at 2 a.m. when the child is ill.
How about the lavish salaried taxpayer paid employees. A couple who lives perhaps on Stratford Rd nearer to Rugby Rd, and with that salary sends daughter to Albany Academy. Mother works at that state plaza and father works on the state campus. Daughter gets sick at school, not an emergency needing hospital visit, just sick and needs to go home. Tell us how Mom or Dad gets child and gets her home on your taxpayer funded CDTA buses. Buses are oh so wonderful, right?
And DV, as you ARE a socialist, tell us about the person who chooses to live in the city, let's say in the GE Plot or the Stockade, and works at KAPL, tell us how that person gets to work on the taxpayer dime on your precious CDTA.
You praise CDTA so much, tell us how these people get to their kids or get to/from work.
Of course, DV will NOT respond to this because IF he does, it WILL be an admission that he is WRONG.
Hey DV, just to help you TRY to respond, I'm sure that you can answer by going to some CDTA website and looking at bus schedules.

FBI agents direct a vehicle carrying a backhoe to a field to dig for the possible remains of former Teamsters union president Jimmy Hoffa June 17, 2013 in Oakland Township, Michigan. The agents were acting on a tip provided by Tony Zerilli, 85, a former mobster, who was released from prison in 2008. Hoffa, who had reported ties to organized crime, went missing in July of 1975. Now.

If the city provides free parking for local businesses THAT is just as much socialist corporate welfare as a WHOLE region providing a mass transportation system -- the only difference is that commuters pay a fare which covers part of the cost of the service.
There is nothing stupid about an intercity trolley or light rail system -- a number of metropolitan areas have them and have benefited because of it. You may choose to disagree with me but that doesn't make me a socialist -- it just means that I happen to disagree on the issue.

Dv WHY are parking lots "city owned" and then requiring the taxpayers to pay for parking at those lots after the taxpayers have already paid for those lots via the loss of the lots being part of the city's tax base?
But how about the city require the businesses to provide the free parking? DUH, Since the residents of the city have paid dearly for the buildings and now pay for the taxes doesn't it make sense that the businesses would have to pay the city for the parking lots and on street parking, to provide parking to the shoppers without making shoppers pay again.
And WHY should the residents who do NOT use buses, trolleys, whatever, be forced to pay for a service they don't want, need, or use? Of course, you wouldn't know this because you are NOT a taxpayer, but those of us who are taxpayers, when we buy a house, when we refinance, there is a CDTA tax at closing, why? Why should we be FORCED to pay for CDTA when we don't use it? Helll, DV, buy a house in Duanesburg, far of ANY bus line, CDTA would NEVER DREAM of having a bus route go out there, so tell us DV, WHY should people who buy a house out in Duanesburg be FORCED to pay for CDTA???? Or here is a good example, people who live in Highbridge or Colbrook, there used to be a bus on Hamburg Street, so it could be thought that people who buy a house there paid the CDTA tax when they bought a house because they had bus service, but the bus service has been taken away so WHY should someone have to STILL pay a CDTA tax where there are no buses?
Not opposed to buses, but expecting the taxpayers, FORCING the taxpayers to pay for it is NOT acceptable. The overwhelming, vast majority of people CANNOT use buses because buses simply do not and will NEVER serve the needs of families.

Free parking is not socialism.
It's socialism when it's awarded to a select number and not the rest.
I'm against someone using taxpayer money to fund it.
Stop trying to outspend Obama.
I said it was a good idea -- I never said who should fund it. The FACT is that the original intercity trolley lines in this area were funded by private businesses.
So my suggestion to you is -- stop trying to suggest that I posted or believe something that I didn't post and/or don't believe.
