Everyone should have a "crank radio" just in case the power goes out.  And don't forget a hand operated can opener, too.  It surprises me how many people don't think about those things until AFTER the power goes out.

Typical DV living in a dream world.  People don't have money for antiques.   But of course, someone who doesn't have a home and family to support, and does NOT pay taxes, a BOY like that would not know what it's like to try to support a family and pay taxes of political cronies.

By the way, are you planning on getting your insurance license back?

We have a battery radio and WGY is listing all of the school delays, closing and road closures.

Ya really need some kind of back up for when the power goes out. (flashlights, batteries etc....)
I'm sure most folks will realize that after last night!

By the way.........crank radios aren't antiques. You can buy them anywhere these days. MANY folks have them. However....We prefer battery powered.

We have a combined crank radio/flashlight and keep a supply of flashlights and batteries just in case.

That is one thing I can say about Ron Paul supporter, they are the type of people who are always prepared for whatever is thrown their way.

Can you imagine if all the school districts in the county were merged into one?

Just think of the MASSIVE EXPENSE that if the "district" had closed.   But that is precisely what cuckoo who doesn't pay taxes thinks is good.   I mean really, did EVERY school in Schenectady CITY need to be closed all day?   Granted, some are near hard hit areas, some probably were without power.   But of course it's because Schenectady abandoned "neighborhood" schools and has to bus kids all over the city, so HUGE EXPENSE to the taxpayers.

So, as cuckoo DV says "consolidate" all the districts and there would be schools not even remotely affected by the storm and they would be closed today.

It would mean the HUGE INCREASE in cost to the taxpayers because the kids would have to be bussed all over the place.

But leave it to a cuckoo who does NOT pay taxes who suggest something that would cause a MASSIVE expense to the taxpayers.   And POSITIVELY the money saved on eliminating superintendents would be far outweighed in the expense of busing kids all over the place, buying buses, more inspections, more gas, more maintenance, more insurance, and in winter oh my goodness, can you imagine the cost, when every school in the county has to delay opening two hours because of some slick streets in Duanesburg for example.

But again, a cowardly cuckoo who does NOT pay taxes cannot speak about the MASSIVE INCREASE in transportation costs alone under his "consolidation" suggestion.

Yup and we are called crazy for it, but the thing is we aren't the ones running out in the middle of the night to walmarts to find empty shelves where the flashlights used to be But I agree a crank flashlight is a must, they don't put out the power of a regular flashlight but they do the job. I prefer LED lanterns myself, they run on batteries but they do the trick. Don't forget to rotate your batteries

I love this little fella, don't let the size fool you this thing is amazing and it is just as good as some of the flashlights that run into the hundreds of dollars.

We have the LED lanterns.

I remember the ice storm of 1967 and how my grandmother, who always had the "cold cellar" stocked with extra canned goods, cooked meals with those sterno on the front porch.  Rather than it being a disaster, it was like being on an adventure for a few days.

Its a good thing to go through as long as you are safe, you will find out quick what you should of had on hand so then you can prepare for possible scenarios later on. This kinda goes into the other topic on here where I tell people to learn from their mistakes. I like those sterno stoves myself, light it, throw a can on top and you are good to go.

My grandparents and parents always taught us to be prepared.  Another quick funny story -- was the Thanksgiving in the early 1970's when we had a huge snowstorm.  In those days, my maternal grandmother invited all of her children and grandchildren to her house for the big dinner but everyone brought something.  That year, one of the out-of-town cousins had insisted that she was going to fix the turkey and bring it.  Needless to say she and the turkey were snowed in -- so my grandmother went down to the chest freezer in the cold storage and she found 3 or 4 cornish game hens.   She fixed them up and put them on the platter normally reserved for the big bird --- and everyone remembers to this day how we joked about who get the drumsticks.

I agree -- learning from mistakes is very important.

And this administration is stigmatizing anybody that takes preparation to sustain themselves in case of a collapse of the corporate economy which will lead to the collapse of the entitlement system.

Anybody that stockpiles food, water, guns, ammo, and fuel are a threat to government.   People must go into debt to sustain the system.  If too many people stockpile and conserve, the corporate consumer based economy will come to a grinding hault.

I never understand the empty shelves that happen with storms...ok, maybe bread or milk, the type of things that people buy on a weekly basis and buy early to make sure they have it...but shovels and flashlights I dont get. How come everyone runs out and buys shovels when their is a blizzard, what happened to their shovel from last year...what happen to their flashlight from the last power outage?
