SCHENECTADY, N.Y. — Schenectady Mayor Gary McCarthy says, although the work is not over yet, the city finished the year of 2012 $3.5 million in the black.

McCarthy says the City Police and Fire Departments came in under budget, the city managed, rather than filled, certain positions when they became vacant. Even mowing the city's parks less and using less electricity in city buildings helped save money.

"It was just good management. We want to show the residents of Schenectady that we're trying to do the right thing for them," the mayor said.

McCarthy says the city also took hundreds of properties through tax foreclosures, prompting many delinquent homeowners to pay off their debts in the nick of time.

Mayor McCarthy and his team are doing a great job running the city of Schenectady.

While I hope this is true, I'm having a hard time believing this. Especially the amount! Had he said we went under budget by $5000 I'd say ok, maybe they did better than normal, but $3.5 million!!! is it 4/1?

the city only came in under budget because they refused to pay their own county taxes.

Mayor McCarthy and his team are doing a great job running the city of Schenectady.

Really?

Creating an ARTIFICIAL surplus by hiking the taxes to almost the highest in the country is NOT a great job.

Now, DV, if they are doing such a great job, explain WHY yet another DRASTIC REDUCTION in the tax base?????    Can you answer that???????

AH, no answer to this question, TOTALLY SPEECHLESS!!!!!!

Now, if they are doing such a great job, explain WHY home values are FALLING BIG TIME??????    Can you answer that??????

AH, no answer to this question, TOTALLY SPEECHLESS!!!!!!

Now, if they are doing such a great job, DV, explain WHY houses are NOT selling!!!!!!!!!   And the FEW that do sell take a year or more to sell?????

AH, no answer to this question, TOTALLY SPEECHLESS!!!!!!

Now, explain what a surplus is.   DV, again, you have PROVEN 1,000% that you are NOT a taxpayer, NOT a homeowner, and NEVER have been.

How DUMB can you be DV???????????     DUH!!!!!!!!!!!!!     The mayor has to pay the county to make the county whole.   The city has to borrow MILLIONS to demolish houses!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now, please provide the accounting for us, DV HOW the mayor arrives at claiming there is a surplus?   Perhaps for one fleeting second in time.   Now subtract all the MILLIONS UPON MILLIONS that the city is in debt!!!!

DV, IF the city is doing such a good job, please explain why it is DEEP DEEP IN DEBT, so deeply financially in trouble that the city CANNOT get approved for a loan AND the city is so bad off that it REFUSES TO PAY IT'S BILLS (paying the county taxes).

Can you answer that, DV??????

AH, no answer to this question, TOTALLY SPEECHLESS!!!!!!

That's right DV, go prove how STUPID you are, just spew some nonsense babble but do NOT address the facts about the debt, inability to get a loan, highest taxes, ever falling tax base, ever falling home values.   Because IF you do address the FACTS---PROVEN WITH OVERWHELMING EVIDENCE, you will have no choice but to admit that you are totally wrong about the city doing well

Now, when are YOU going to buy a house in the city????    When are you going to move and live IN the city?????

AH, no answer to this question, TOTALLY SPEECHLESS!!!!!!

Always find the financial news coming from the City and school district a joke.

One property owner is essentially paying 2/3rd more in property taxes than those in surrounding counties, yet all this money is going where? How can a Mayor not budget ...oh that's right...when you don't cut anything from a budget, you save nothing. Trust me McCheesy, the lights have been out in City Hall for years now!!

The schools are the same way. A $150+ million dollar budget with a steady increase of taxes every year and the graduation rate keeps going down just as steadily.

We pay for failure. Our taxes are paying of incompetence. It's time to vote these people out or get a State control board in because nothing is changing.

They are in court over unpaid bills, are they not? He's trying to put off bills until he gets enough money in to pay them, like many individuals do when times are tough, but that is not the same thing as being in the black. It also illustrates how we taxpayers are paying to support a government that doesnot perform the services we pay for.

If the government does indeed manage to break even while supporting outsiders and allowing our neighborhoods to deteriorate to the point where no one decent will live here, that is not an achievement. That is the minimum acceptable standard.

Why are they discussing borrowing money to demolish houses, if they are 3.5 million in the black? I think that "the work is not done yet" caveat is the clue. Does that mean "we are ahead until we are made to pay up what we've been letting slide"?

I do give the guy some credit for trying, he was left a big mess. The only place I saw this announcement was WTEN's website. I wonder why other outlets are not trumpeting the good news?

And the cheerleader is such an ignoramus that the only thing he knows how to do is do a "copy/paste" routine.

DV, can you respond to why you ignore the SUBSTANTIAL DEBT that the city has?

Well???????

Can you?????

Can you explain why you ignore all the debts that the city has, debts that are not being paid which then only result in a FALSE IMAGE of a surplus

Are you that much of an IGNORAMUS that you know that all this is is a FAKE number on paper created ONLY because the city is not paying it's bills and thus at a fleeting moment in time there is some money in the bank.

Tell us, DV, what will be the result IF and WHEN the city pays it's debts????????    What will happen them?????    Huh?    Well????

The whiners and complainers can't stand any good news.

Good news?????

Another year, another DRASTIC REDUCTION to the city's tax base.    That is good new????

Continually plummeting home  values.     That is good news??????

Inability for homeowners to sell their homes.      That is good news???????

Tax bills almost the highest in the country and going up every year.     That is good news???????

Assessments a twice the true value of the home combined with a refusal to reassess.    That is good news???????

Wild uncontrolled spending on things that are NOT essential.      That is good news?

Very long time taxpaying businesses downtown only to replaced by non-taxpaying for-profit businesses.   That's good news?????

Very long time taxpaying businesses being forced to pay their own taxes PLUS the taxes of the rich political cronies of the city/co dems.    That is good news??????

Financially struggling homeowners being forced to incur the burden of paying taxes of millionaire political cronies.    That is good news??????

Financially struggling homeowners who have been forced to pay for rehab/remodel/new buildings for millionaire political cronies of the city/co dems and then be penalized by the city because they have no money left to fix up their own homes.   That is good news??????

Homeowners losing their homes because of inability to pay the taxes of the millionaire political cronies of the city/co dems.    That is good news?????

An ever increasing number of EXISTING residential units becoming vacant because people are fleeing the city.    That is good news???????

A city that presents a balance sheet that EXCLUDES the debts in order to make it appear that there is a surplus, i.e., the city lying to the people.    That is good news??????

A city that refuses to pay it's bills in order to create a FAKE SURPLUS (while it is really in deep deep sh*t financially).    That is good news??????

Would you care to explain, DV to explain WHAT the good news is?

Would you care to explain, DV, how failing to pay bills in order to create a FAKE SURPLUS is good news???????

Watch DV.   He will either respond with nonsense babble or avoid any response.

But 1,000% GUARANTEED, he will NOT speak to the EVIDENCE, He will NOT speak to the accounting issues of the avoiding paying bills in order to create a FAKE SURPLUS.

Quoted Text
DV, try learning from the intelligent people on these boards.   For example,  during the month of May, I choose not to pay the mortgage.   I choose not to pay National Grid.   I choose not to pay the waste collection bill.   I choose not to pay the care loan.   I choose not to pay the credit card bill.   I choose not to pay into my retirement fund.   I choose not to pay my internet bill.   I choose not to pay my phone bill.

At the end of the month, do I have a surplus?????   Do I DV????????    Well?????    Can you answer that question???????

Do I have a surplus????      Yes or No?????

Are you man enough to answer??????

The real SAD thing for the city of Schenectady is that far too many people in the city are just as stupid as is DV in that they to not have the intelligence to realize that the city merely played cooked the books.  Like DV, they don't have the intelligence to consider that cooking the books and manipulating numbers by not paying the bills has created a BIG FAT LIE!!!

Working together works! First Mayor McCheese stiffed the kids in the City School District then McCheese stiffed the County. The County DEMS are suing McCheese for the millions in County taxes the City refuses to pay. Not to mention the merry go round in finance. The truth teller is fired with police escort out of City Hall while another flees to a big raise at DEM ruined Proctor's. More smoke and mirrors from the DEM implosion
squad.

Ah, yes, that will be DV's response in order to avoid addressing the issue of not paying bills in order to create a FAKE "surplus."    Watch, mark my words.

Was this story in the Gazette? The top local story is about Jack's Place. I am looking at the online edition and only seeing headlines, does anyone else see it there? Why would only one place put this out there?
