Lawrence O'Donnell joined former IRS official Marcus Owens and Democratic strategist Julian Epstein for some straight talk on IRS activity with regard to their examination of applications for tax-exempt status and whether what they did was improper. Here are some facts:
~ Over 80 percent of applications submitted for tax-exempt status were from conservative organizations.
~ The only organization to have its tax-exempt status revoked was one run by Democratic women to try and encourage more women to run for office.
~ There is no requirement that any 501(c)(4) organization apply for approval of their tax-exempt status. If they do not apply, there is a risk of audit and disqualification down the road, but they are not required to apply to be a 501(c)(4) entity.
~ There was no limitation imposed by the IRS on these groups' ability to influence the 2012 election.
~ Many of the IRS requests for information came about because of activities observed by agents in real time.

Fish rot from the head first. The spin continues but the truth will be revealed in the end.

Profiling is alright if it's just done to conservatives.
Over 80 percent of applications submitted for tax-exempt status were from conservative organizations. If they just picked random 501C4, they would get 80% Conservative groups.

Then why were they directed to look for "tea party" in the organizations name? If 80% were conservative groups filing for exemption, what was the point of profiling certain names in the groups name? Did they want to make sure they were getting 100% of the conservative groups? Didn't want to take the chance of getting a "liberal" organization?
Breaking: OBAMA IRS SCANDAL WIDENS – Conservative Activists and Businesses Targeted, Too …Update: 90 IRS Employees Involved Posted by Jim Hoft on Friday, May 31, 2013, 1:48 PM
The Obama IRS Scandal widens:
** Nearly 500 conservative groups targeted ** At least 5 pro-Israel groups targeted ** Constitutional groups targeted ** Groups that criticized Obama administration were targeted ** At least two pro-life groups targeted ** A Texas voting-rights group was targeted ** Conservative activists and businesses were targeted
It is now clear that the Obama IRS was targeting a much broader array of conservative groups than just Tea Party organizations. McClatchyDC reported:
A group of anti-abortion activists in Iowa had to promise the Internal Revenue Service it wouldn’t picket in front of Planned Parenthood.
Catherine Engelbrecht’s family and business in Texas were audited by the government after her voting-rights group sought tax-exempt status from the IRS.
Retired military veteran Mark Drabik of Nebraska became active in and donated to conservative causes, then found the IRS challenging his church donations.
While the developing scandal over the targeting of conservatives by the tax agency has largely focused to date on its scrutiny of groups with words such as “tea party” or “patriot” in their names, these examples suggest the government was looking at a broader array of conservative groups and perhaps individuals. Their collective experiences at a minimum could spread skepticism about the fairness of a powerful agency that should be above reproach and at worst could point to a secret political vendetta within the government against conservatives.

Those sources should definitely have their First Amendment revoked. What right do they have muddying up public discourse? That must be left up to the "real" reporters working for the corporate media.
You can't leave free speech up to the unqualified. You need press credentials to exercise free speech. Everybody else is a threat to national security.

The IRS may be stupid, but no scandal or conspiracy exists

These antics are providing more distractions on Capitol Hill, the tactic employed most often from the right to block the Obama administration from achieving any of its second-term goals. But for those familiar with this topic, it comes as no surprise that conservative groups would scream foul. The non-profit sections of the IRS Code have been used to provide a non-disclosure funnel for “dark money” political contributions. While both parties have knowingly participated, it is well known that the GOP has benefited far more greatly, the real reason for recent angst.
