Well if I had been in that same situation as the police this time and a gun was what I had in my hand I would have fired at the man also because I wouldn't have been able to choose the best option of running away due to the other guy there being wounded. I just wonder if we couldn't come up with a better plan before the fact for dealing with this.
"The shooting was justified", of course it was, somebody had a knife, but what if there was a procedure that could be followed that could solve the situation without the deadly force? I don't even think there is that much research into the matter, most of the knife attack research deals with what to do when you are unarmed and attacked by a knife wielder. And then there are the unhelpful homilies like "you bring a gun to a knife fight" which might make the person uttering it feel tough or smart but it is hardly up-to-date scientific crime fighting policy.
If there is better, more modern training available are we providing it to our police force? If there isn't, are we lobbying for that research to be done? We are a high crime city. If we are used as a crime dump for downstate, somebody has to advocate on our behalf for funds to deal with it. |
