SCHENECTADY -- Police shot a man at a Balltown Road apartment after he stabbed another man and lunged at police, authorities confirmed Thursday.
Police arrived at 9:20 a.m., heard a fight going on inside the locked apartment and kicked in the door at 3290 Balltown Road. They found a man holding a knife to another man who was already bleeding from a stab wound to the chest, Public Safety Commissioner Wayne Bennett said.
A sergeant ordered the assailant to drop the knife, but the man lunged at the victim, Bennett said. The sergeant opened fire, hitting the man with the knife once in the chest before he could inflict another stab wound, Bennett said.
The man with the knife lunged at the sergeant and was shot twice more in the chest, the commissioner said.
The man who was shot was taken to Ellis Hospital. Bennett said his injuries were "extremely critical." The man who was stabbed was expected to survive.

I love this fine piece of journalism. The "authorities" confirmed it. No need for a trial or further investigation of the use of lethal force, or ask for the authorities definition of lunge. Pull the plug on this guy and get him into the ground.
I thought that tasers were acquired by our police department to avoid the use of lethal force in these types of situations. It is lucky that no one else got shot, which is a risk in multiple unit dwellings.
Yes, where are the tasers? Are they trained that if they have to shoot, they shoot to kill? The man wasn't armed with a gun per the article.
Maybe Visitor can shed some light on the taser issue as well as the training of when/where on the body to shoot.

Lucky for cops they can carry high capacity clips to protect themselves from lunging knife wielding perps.

Yes, if you shoot you do shoot to kill, otherwise there is no reason to shoot. That much I know for fact about these situations. I just don't know why they couldn't automatically tase someone in that situation instead of waiting until he lunges and then shooting. You can tase at a pretty good distance. These lunging/shooting (shabbing) incidents are getting to be a regular thing. Also I wonder did the cops have their safety vests on? Are all of our police getting the best training available?

Cicero - If you read as much as you posted you would know that this case will be investigated by the DA's office.
My opinion is limited by the fact that I was not there and lack the benefit of witness testimony and available evidence at the scene. But, someone who is being tased could inflict more harm with the knife. The way this scenario appears to me - victim was already cut and suspect demonstrated an intent to use the knife. Also, know that tasers while very effective do not always work. In this case, you have to end the threat immediately and unfortunately the only sure way to do that is the se of deadly force.
