Old Dominion Freight Line Inc. will build an $8.3 million distribution center in the Glenville Business and Technology Park in Schenectady County, NY.
Thomasville, NC-based Old Dominion plans to buy a vacant, 13-acre parcel at the entrance to the business park, where it will build a 40,000-square-foot warehouse.
It will employ 38 people when completed next year. That number could increase to 120 over time.
Construction will start this summer. The 152-acre Glenville Business and Technology Park is owned by the Galesi Group of Rotterdam.
The Schenectady County Industrial Development Agency today approved a package of incentives for the project, including a sales-tax exemption on building materials, that could save the company $500,000 over a 10-year period, said Ray Gillen, chairman of the Metroplex Development Authority, the entity that oversees the IDA.
Old Dominion (Nasdaq: ODFL), with more than 12,000 employees, reported revenue of $2 billion in 2012.
The trucking company has been making some heavy capital investments in the last couple years. In 2012, it committed $143 million to new real estate and expansion projects. Old Dominion says it will spend $95 million on expansions and real-estate purchases in 2013.
This is the typical downfall of what Gillen has done over and over and over again.
He gives millions of dollars in no-interest loans or grants to huge companies for only 38 jobs...the projected jobs are a farce. The company will relocate before that.
This has happened with CardioMag (they left after the initial Plex funds), the State workers and now the recent loss of 120 jobs downtown from another NYS commission.
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice shame on me....what the heck Gillen!! Haven't you learned ANYTHING yet!!

-savings on sales tax of materials (the State loses) -a PILOT or no payment of school or county taxes (the County and schools lose) -a 'facade' grant (everyone loses) -a non-interest bearing Plex loan (the County loses) -more Plex, Sate and/or Federal grants (we all lose) -38 jobs...maybe full time...maybe part time.
Overall millions of our taxpayer money will go to a company for, not even, 40 jobs. The 12,000 workers Old Dominion has will stay down South. A company with $2 billion in profit needs how much money from the Plex??
In my opinion, make sure the COST TO THE COUNTY IS WORTH THE MONEY SPENT!! 38 jobs...a few million into Galesi's pocket....

I will explain a little bit about a truck terminal. Currently they have their terminal locally in Colonie, where they rent. They have outgrown it. They are one of the few truck cos doing well, and funny enough it is b/c they are NON UNION! Also they have a work ethic and are pretty good at communicating vs. a the rest of the industry which lack of human communication is widely the norm. When dealing with truck freight lines, "communicative" and reasonable" are not words you normally think of.
These are not new jobs- they exist already in Colonie in a terminal they have outgrown. They will commute to their new office in G-vill. None of the workers will move to Schitneck county. A few will spend their lunch money at the local pizza shop. Truckers will buy their eats en route, and at the end of the day the big winner will be....

The economic impact is minimal to non-existent except for the friends of democrap party, once again. Taxes will be abated and favorable assessments will assist the local homeowners to subsidize the billionaires as crony corporatist tactics prevail again.

Well thank you Grammy for that enlightening information. As a matter of fact, Old Dominions website has several articles about how they are consolidating centers in Las Vegas, PA...all over with no mention of taxbreaks in those areas. Interesting that this Plex news didn't include the fact that this is just a move from Colonie.
Transfinders moved from Erie Blvd to Downtown. AAA moved from down the street to Center City. The employment service (ADECCO) moved from River Rd to Center City. Marcellas moved from MP to their new tax exempt building. YMCA moved from down the street to Center City with millions in Plex funds. Old Dominion moving from Colonie to Galesi-ville.

Can you tell us how much of an increase this will result in to the county's tax base? Can you provide some supporting examples from the past ten dem years that show how spending tax money has increased the tax base in the city and/or county?

The FACT is that if a business chooses to move into an area, set up shop and hire employees that is a GOOD THING. .
Is it a good thing when the businesses that set up shop get handouts from the taxpayers, are exempt from paying property taxes which then causes higher taxes on financially struggling homeowners? Then in turn home values go down. Then in turn houses won't sell. Then in turn neighborhoods become blighted.
Is all that a good thing?
Just like downtown, hundreds of millions of tax dollars for a bunch of low wage jobs that people have to be subsidized on public assistance? Busineses not paying property taxes which means the homeowners had to make up the difference while they have seen their homes go down in value?

Well DV, those WOULD be great points...a new industry bringing new jobs...but that's NOT the case! Never is!
Why would Plex take jobs from A NEIGHBORING COUNTY rather than get a billion-dollar company to set up shop in Schenectady with 38 NEW jobs. These jobs already exist in Colonie (thanks again Grammy for the info), there will be a vacant building in Colonie and millions spent of taxpayer money to re-locate a business.
It's bad for upstate! Creating competition among economic development agencies ..that's insane. Creating competition among business...that's free enterprise, but unfortunately, the Plex has sucked the life out of capitalism. The Plex is creating a quasi-government-run-communist economic-atmosphere each dollar they 'grant'.
