Oak Street bridge in Schenectady closes to vehicles
By Lauren Stanforth
Published 3:38 pm, Tuesday, April 23, 2013

Schenectady

A small bridge that links the Mont Pleasant and Bellevue neighborhoods will be closed indefinitely due to structural concerns.

The Oak Street bridge, which is accessed from 8th and Cheltingham avenues, will be closed to vehicular traffic starting Wednesday because of deterioration in the steel piers that support the deck, according to Mayor Gary McCarthy. The state Department of Transportation cited the bridge, which was built in the 1930s, with a red flag for structural deficiencies last year.

The city says it has notified Amtrak about the problem, as McCarthy says the train company is the entity responsible for the steel piers. A rail line exists underneath the bridge.

The bridge will, however, remain open for pedestrians. Vehicles will still be able to drive between the neighborhoods from Broadway or Altamont Avenue.

The city DEM leaders REFUSE to make their multimillionaire cronies pay taxes so the city has no money to fix bridges.

But, DV says not to be negative.

So, bridges failing but we must ignore that, let's just increase taxes on the homeowners and cause home values to go down even more and that will help the city thrive.

is that right, DV??????    Spend money on downtown while bridges crumble.

Of course, he will not engage in INTELLIGENT conversation about the value of spending the tax dollars on downtown which produces no return on the investment, while the neighborhoods suffer with crumbling bridges.

It's the renaissance, bridges are crumbling and DV is so delusional that he thinks this is wonderful.

It's the typical FACTS and TRUTHS, provided by OFFICIAL SOURCES, that I post.

But DV is so delusional that he cannot even post about a closed bridge failing despite homeowners paying ever increasing taxes while their home values are plummeting.

Someone call the ambulance, he needs to be taken to the psych ward

The city is trying to stick Amtrak with fixing the bridge....Amtrak will dig in its heels and it will go to court.
Altamont ave will just get more crowded as the people In Bellevue and the Heldeberg Ave neighborhoods will have no other choice....
This bridge will stay closed to vehicle traffic for months, if not YEARS

One sentence!  Try figuring which parts to take out of it, that don't apply.   Intelligent people like us "nayboobs" can do it, it needs some concentration.   Point to make, they need to write this stuff simpler, make several sentences based on the parameters

And that doesn't even include the next two paragraphs posted above.

The bridge in front of GE was also structurally unsound.

They stacked a dozen I beams on the walls to hold it up.

They painted them yellow, so pedestrians won't walk it them.

That is pretty cut and dry who must pay for the steel piers.

The city should deny AMTRAK travel on those tracks until the bridge supports are repaired.

That will get immediate action.

Just call AMTRAK and inform them their tracks are closed until the bridge is repaired.

I'm pretty sure that Amtrak, has federal right of way. They carry mail.
But thanks for playing.
Also, the railroads are a protected part of the military infrastructure.

Goofbags on this board keep railing (no pun intended) against the government (and apparently they lack the ability to discern the difference between local, state, and federal) and how someday (yeah, someday), they are going to rise up, and do something about it.

REVOLT! DENOUNCE IT ON YOUR BLOG!

Yeah, that'll work.

You lack the balls to do anything whatsoever other than to biatch and moan.

None of you are willing to do anything on the local level, no less nationally.

For the price of those stupid stanchions (remember those? Those things that looked like pawn chess pieces?) alone, that bridge could have been maintained.

Amtrak keeps their infrastructure in working order, because the alternative would result in disaster.

Schenectady, not so much.
They don't really care about what happens even a month from now, no less long term.

Actually, that's not such a bad idea.
It would force federal intervention upon this sh*thole, and it's practices.
