Cop accused of road rage Off-duty Schenectady detective denies pointing gun, PBA official says By Paul Nelson
A Schenectady police detective with 19 years on the force was placed on unpaid leave Wednesday after being charged with misdemeanor menacing charges for allegedly pointing his service weapon at two motorists during an off-duty road rage episode earlier this month, according to Glenville and Schenectady police officials.
Glenville Lt. Stephen Janik said Detective John Hotaling turned himself in Wednesday to Glenville police headquarters and was charged with two counts of second-degree menacing. Hotaling, a detective in the department's youth aid bureau, was released without bail pending a Tuesday court date, Janik said.
The charges and departmental investigation stem from an April 7 encounter with three occupants of another vehicle around 3 p.m. when the detective was driving home to Glenville from work in his pickup truck, authorities said.
The cop was apparently traveling behind a vehicle on Maple Avenue that was either driving slowly or erratically when he drove around it by crossing the double yellow lines. When the two vehicles stopped at a red light, Hotaling got out of his pickup and confronted the others.
Obviously it was McC trying to cover up this incident til after the hype about the premiere of "The Place...." because of the storyline in it about SCHENECTADY cops. He wants all to think that's all long done and over with and there are no problems under his admin.
Optimists close their eyes and pretend problems are non existent. Better to have open eyes, see the truths, acknowledge the negatives, and speak up for the people rather than the politicos and their rich cronies.

Sorry to point this out MC1, but Hotaling turned himself in Wednesday...yesterday. You know, he had to okay it with the Union first...wanted to see if he could get paid leave.
so let me get this right.....this cop pulls a gun because of road rage and charged with second-degree menacing....yes?
so if i pull my 'legal gun' out because of road rage....i'll be charged the same with no jail time.....yes?
or does the cop get a pass?

You would have the book thrown at you

At one point, the detective returned to his pickup, got his gun, walked back to the other vehicle and pointed the weapon at two of the three people inside, authorities said.
Funny isn't it? You would have thought that Hotaling had a cell phone or something to CALL THE GLENVILLE POLICE...I always see the schenectady cops on their cell phones driving around the City.
various - tug of war, you have to be kidding. The notion that management and the PBA are one happy family is wildly off the mark. PBA typically fights all efforts at disciplining officers. Ritz's comments were all too predictable.
McC had nothing to do with withholding the release of the info. Incident most likely did not come to light immediately, time spent on internal investigation, and time spent on criminal investigation. The fact that an officer has the authority to carry an off duty weapon probably complicated the investigation. There are scenarios in which he would be authorized pulling his weapon out, not saying that is the case here, but the investigating authorities, criminal and administrative, had to make sure they were right on that issue before proceeding.
this is all just normal behavior and of course when it happens in the private sector nothing happens. Move along, nothing to see

That's ok that you pointed it out. Then the union postponed it because it would make themselves reflective of the movie But of course the movie only reflected the city PD.
Yeah, paid leave, I do believe you there, 1,000%

Gun-point case cop 'shaky,' motorist says By Paul Nelson Updated 10:25 pm, Thursday, April 18, 2013
John J. Hotaling, 45, of Glenville (Glenville Police Department)
Even with a gun in his face at point-blank range, Matthew Arnow said he didn't back down from the angry motorist who had just identified himself as a cop on a recent Sunday afternoon.
Arnow said it wasn't until six days after the April 7 incident with the pickup truck driver that he and his father, Jeffrey, found out the motorist was off-duty Schenectady Detective John Hotaling.
"You wouldn't expect any person of the law to pull out a gun, put it in someone's face, and tell them they're going to kill them, and jump back in the car," said Arnow, 36.
The Arnows recalled Thursday, a day after Hotaling, 45, was charged with two counts of misdemeanor menacing, how the ordeal marred their peaceful family drive along Maple Avenue in their hometown after picking up Jeffrey Arnow's grandson, Nicholas Meisner, 17, from work that afternoon..................>>>>............>>>>..............Read more: http://www.timesunion.com/loca.....82.php#ixzz2QuXDgZDD
