Thirty-four administrative employees worked their last day at Price Chopper today in Schenectady, NY, as the Capital Region’s largest grocery chain eliminated the jobs—along with 46 other vacant positions—to cut costs and stay competitive.
It’s the first time in the 81-year history of The Golub Corp. that layoffs hit the administrative staff.
The 80 staff reductions illustrate the increasing pressure on the company to control costs as consumers have even more options for buying food.
The company cited rising costs for health care and fuel among the reasons for the layoffs.
No other job cuts are planned.
“This was a difficult, but necessary decision for us to make as we move forward in today’s challenging economy,” Price Chopper President and CEO Jerry Golub said. “Continuing to focus our efforts on efficiency and innovation will help us to enhance our customers’ shopping experience while providing them with tangible value.”

So will Neil be reimbursing the city for the loans, grants and tax breaks he awarded himself to relocate in the city?
wonder what the golub's salaries are? their life continues unchanged while 34 people have had their lives turned up-side-down!

It doesn't matter what the Golub's salaries are. It's their food business. They built it. They own it.

building it was THEIR choice....no one forced them to! so now the 'rats on the wheel' who worked to make the business a success are thrown to the curb while the 'upper's' are not effected!

The Golub's worked hard to get where they are......no doubt about that......BUT, now they are not top dog.....and fought long and hard not tohave any competition.....but it's here now and it's here to stay.
they fought long and hard for competition NOT to be here at all......in the end, someone has to suffer and it is the little guy......they take care of the big guys....and so be it...
the golubs worked hard in one aspect.....and their employees worked just as hard in another aspect. the workers gave their blood and sweat to that company...just as other employees for other companies have.
they have strong armed and manipulated.....and now their a$$ is being kicked by shoprite.
...ya can tell that Louis isn't in charge any longer....he's surely missed!

Golub Corp is in a death spiral. They have been out maneuvered.
Do agree with this!
Golub has received Plex grants, tax breaks, etc....etc....AND has kept other grocery stores (any real competition) OUT of the City boundaries.
Too bad Niskayuna hasn't listened to Golub with their Hannafords, Shoprites and the comeback of the Co-op.
Proof positive that even when the governement throws taxpayer money at you over and over again, it doesn't exactly mean you no longer have to compete. The spiral is upon them....
louis (the genious) is gone. he was very respected in the industry. the 'next' generation is on board now....plus the caliber of workers ain't what they use to be....as well as loyalty. they aren't as savy as they use to be.....obviously!
they should have never moved their corporate office....FIRST BIG MISTAKE!!

A story I heard from several people, who don't know each other, is that a company out west bought Price Chopper. Yes, a story.
I couldn't fathom Golub ever selling. I think there is another grocery chain in the country that is called Price Chopper as well with no connection.
But I'm wondering what McCheese and plex are thinking, more jobs in Schenectady being lost.
Optimists close their eyes and pretend problems are non existent. Better to have open eyes, see the truths, acknowledge the negatives, and speak up for the people rather than the politicos and their rich cronies.
