A few years back my daughter who is safety conscious and always wears her seat belt drove past that same area to go to Hannaford Plaza. On her way back was stopped by a cop near the bridge, he said she was not wearing her seat belt when she had passed 1/2 hour earlier. She assured him she was.
I'm glad Henry posted the "warning" as you can be stopped and ticketed and whose word will the court take.
......or how bout being stopped for going thru a stop sign....when there was NO stop sign there!!!!!!!!!!!!!
and to your point....who's word is the court going to take? the law abiding citizen....or the costumed person with a badge? Guess it will depend on how much revenue they need, huh?

Very good box, you finally admit the governments role is to treat ALL citizens like they are children and they are the parents - the nanny state. You apparently like being treated like a child even in your 60's.
What country do you live in MC1!! What constitution do you follow??? Americans have the right to refuse being detained WITHOUT probable cause.....get it???
they can already see your 'visible' registration/inspection stickers and can run you plates!! Isn't that ENOUGH???
I would ever expect them to search my car. Maybe I should be been clearer, if you're not guilty of driving unregistered, uninspeted car, don't worry. Oh, and the seat belt and phone/texting.
I was figuring merely that you are driving, well, "crawling" through the lane just so they can take a glance at the stickers and seat belts. Of course, anyone talking/texting will stop before they get to the cop. And the non-seat belt people will probably buckle up. Those who have expired stickers will probably try to find a side street to turn off of.
But yes, as someone else mentioned, it's the day before Easter and people don't have the time today to be going through so slow. I don't know if they have a convenient place to pull off to when there is a violation to prevent everyone else being stuck while they issue citations, whatever

If your seatbelt isn't worn exactly the way that the state says it has to be worn then you can be ticketed for not wearing a seatbelt.
YUP! If ya wear yourseatbelt wrapped once around your neck, you'll get a ticket for being that dumb!

This is really a curiosity question for visitor since he is obviously a police officer. It's a seatbelt related question.
As hospitals are discharging people so soon after surgery, what "rules" or leeway apply if a passenger perhaps was just discharged from the hospital and can't put the seatbelt on because maybe of chest or abdomen having been cut open and there should be pressure or whatever?
What about a 5 yr old in a back seat (who otherwise is required to be in a child seat) but who is in a body cast (from waste to knee, often used with broken femur) and is laying down on the back seat?
Purely curiousity but based on maybe not all that unusual situations, and I've never seen such addressed anywhere.
Thank you.

Not all police are dirty or abuse their power. You want to complain about the entitlement society, the welfare society, public sector unions... The things that drive the state and local budgets up - fine, you'd be absolutely right. Do I think the mayor called the police chief to say "we need more revenue"? No, but maybe it's just "known". I don't know - but this craziness that the SPD is part of some grand police state, is just that - craziness.
I live in a not-so-great neighborhood.
Big argument right outside my place happened and after 20+ mins, for the first time in living here for 13+ years, I heard a gunshot and from my second floor apartment, being that it was night time - I even saw the muzzle flash reflect around the neighborhood.
I called 911 and within a few minutes 2-3 police cars were here.
Problem solved.
These guys literally risk their lives in this crumbling city - and yes a number of them have been corrupted by power. That's the nature of power. It certainly doesn't help them when the populace further antagonize the good ones that are out there.
I am not in law enforcement and neither is anyone in my family, nor do I have any friends in it.

MEDICAL EXEMPTION
Quoted Text
For almost every medical problem or physical situation, wearing a seat belt increases your protection against death or serious injury. However, if a physical condition inhibits the proper use of a seat belt, you may be exempt from the seat belt law if your doctor certifies your condition and exemption in writing. Certification must be on the physicians letterhead and carried with you when you travel. For more information, see publication "Guidelines for Granting Medical Exemptions from Seat Belt Use" (C-58), available from the DMV Internet Office, by request from a DMV Call Center, and at any motor vehicle office.

I agree to a degree. Cops have a role in RESPONDING to crime. An argument followed by gun shots in a city, ok, some probable cause. Just like a fire fighter, smell or see smoke, respond to see if there is a fire. But I wouldn't like to see the fire chief randomly in my home to inspect for fire code violations. Or patrolling the streets in anticipation of a possible fire.
An expired license or an expired registration does not make a driver any less safe, it has nothing to do with traffic safety. It has all to do with finding people that haven't paid their NYS driving privilege ransom to the state, and in doing so, the local municipality gets their cut in ticket fines.
It's not a conspiracy, it's business as usual for the state.

You probably heard of quotas which are very real, although the department likes to call them goals.

The shooting took place so what problem was solved, that means the crime took place. I understand police can not stop all crimes and be everywhere but this is why law enforcement should focus on these issues instead of say a expired inspection sticker or a unbelted seat belt.

No police are safer then the average citizen don't buy that they risk their lives anymore then anyone here. Remember criminals prey on the weak and defenseless not the strong and armed. It is the citizens who have to confront the criminals before the police do, sad part is to many of the weak have to wait for the strong to show up because becoming one of the strong is so heavily regulated in NY.

let them stop whenever they want.....catching a lot of drug dealers , drunk drivers and bunglers this way......if you have nothing to hide.....I'd say....doing their job and then some...

better to be safe than sorry........
as long as they are not bothering the good citizens....why not.......AND just maybe something bigger is going on......
WARNING WARNING POLICE WILL BE STOPPING ALL CARS TODAY....JUST LOOKING.....HAVE A NICE DAY.

Well, drug dealing is a victimless crime...It's a waste of money.
I'd like to know how many they "catch" in relation to how many innocent people they harass.
