we mostly shop at small local businesses. but we also shop at bj's and would also shop at costcos.

Political wacko responses aside, are they better than BJ's or Sam's club? I really don't know, just looking for opinions, thanks.
From people that I have talked to the answer depends on a number of factors. Not all locations of the same chain have the same selection. Sam's is more consistent with the merchandise that they stock than is BJs. There are certain items that we buy in bulk for church events and we can always count on Sam's having them in stock while sometimes BJs will carry something for a while than not carry it.
Interestingly, I have found that the best independent, locally owned purveyor of bulk items for our church events is Sahr's.

I think Costco has higher end products.
E.g, much better TV selection and quantity.
They also pay their employees VERY well considering their experience / education. Employees supposedly love working there.
I'd join in a heartbeat - not for weekly trips, but for once a month specials that are too good to be true, and I'd pick up other things in bulk at the same time.
Maybe it is just me but bigger stores (doesn't matter the name) aren't my cup of tea. It is nice to go to smaller family-owned businesses -- you know the ones that you don't need a map and a gps to find your way around, the ones where they actually know you and say hello, the ones where the clerks/associates know their merchandise and don't go into shock if you give them a 20 dollar bill and exact change in coins for a bill that comes to $18.37 ------ I won't name the big chain retail store that I once patronized where the cashier and the manager had a "melt down" because the cashier had given me too much change and when I tried to give back the overage she flipped out.

when buying in bulk, you can't beat the bj's or costcos. Some other stores may have sales occasionally to match....but that is rare.
Most folks who live out in duanesburg or in areas where location is an issue always buy in bulk....especially in the winter.

On the change thing, I can 1,000% agree.
It would be nice to have family owned department stores, like the Carl Co, but DV, you DO know, that downtown can't even attract a dollar store!
And again, people in Schenectady simply cannot afford the family owned businesses, not after paying for their own taxes PLUS the taxes of the downtown dem millionaire political cronies, not to mention paying the taxes of a county paid employee who LIED on a STAR application making homeowners pay two STAR exemptions
Optimists close their eyes and pretend problems are non existent. Better to have open eyes, see the truths, acknowledge the negatives, and speak up for the people rather than the politicos and their rich cronies.
