IN 1965, parking was tight in the Crane Street business district and merchants were ready to serve customers
in an era when Schenectady had steady industrial jobs and was known as the city that lights and hauls the world.
(Schenectady County Historical Society for the Times Union)

TODAY?S CRANE Street business district in the Mont Pleasant neighborhood has fewer businesses,
and plenty of parking.

L4L wow does that bring back memories, I was a little kid then and used to walk on Crane St. with my mom or grandmother, to white eagle bakery, the clothing store, Mt. Pleasant Bowling Lanes, the fish store etc.

Now its just people hanging out and just like here in the hill in the summer ......

Waiting for the unemployed dem cheerleader who lived there, never owned property, family never owned a home there, but he'll be on here with "The Complete History of Crane St and Mt Pleasant."   The "know-it-all."

Mt. Pleasant Bowling Lanes, I used to go there all the time. Back when Tony Mauro and Ray ran the place.
White Eagle bakery had the best pastries too.

Now I avoid Mt pleasant except when I go see Pat, patty and Mike:

The demise of Mt Pleasant has more to do with the children moving to the suburbs that anything else.
My grandparents owned a house there until the late 1970's...their 3 children all moved to the burbs...but even before that you could the see the neighborhood starting to go downhill.... the kids moved to the burbs, the parents stayed until the bitter end, then the house was either rented out by the kids or sold to landlords that rented them to mostly "section 8" families, because frankly, the rental checks were more reliable coming from the gov't than the tenant.

As the neighborhood changed for the worse, the businesses moved out one by one.
Schenectady isn't by itself, the same has happened in troy and albany. There has been some revitalization, but not enough. City leaders think that the best thing they can do is make their cities tourist destinations, and ignore the residents that live there...how many times does this formula need to fail before we get it?

One big difference no other County has Metrograft sucking sales tax dollars from the poor to give to multi-millionaire developers/bakers. This is horrible 1% exploitation unless the recipients are DEMS. Then it is "progress" and revitalization. Did you hear about the ALCO museum? lol

I used to bowl there when I was a kid, still have my trophies and bowling patches from there.
