As a Catholic, I'm surprised you can't see the error of EVER letting the State define marriage. Christians need to start disengaging from the state and begin to govern themselves based on their church doctrine. Catholics(and Christians in general) should stop prostelatizing through legislation - it backfired
Catholics should be libertarians by nature.
I went to a Catholic school... they are anything BUT libertarians!

I don't think that it is possible to take the State out of the equation since it has been involved in the definition of and rituals of marriage for thousands of years.
But the priests that perform a marriage in NYS must sign and submit the marriage licence to local government clerk. How does a Catholic Priest in good conscience now sign a NYS state marriage certificate that represents something that is so contradictory to their teachings? They should refuse to sign them as an expression of civil disobedience.
Just because the state has a role in legally definining doesn't mean they should willfully participate. The church needs to grow a spine and start leading their flock away from the corrupt and degenerate state.

First, no valid, legitimately acting Catholic priest in the state has performed a same-sex marriage.
Second, for a Catholic priest to perform a traditional marriage in the state would not be a violation of good conscience nor of Church law or Church teaching.
Third, the Church most certainly has a spine --- the spineless ones are the many supposedly Catholic politicians who spit in the face of the Church, and pander for campaign $, votes, and worldly popularity by supporting positions wholly inconsistent with Church moral teaching.
The Church has always and will always lead its members to stand up for what is God's TRUTH.
and to respond to another posters jibe about praying to God for the right person in the White House --- prayer only goes so far --- we still have to get to the polls and vote for candidates who will be pleasing in God's eyes and follow God's Law. I don't believe for a moment that left wing extremists like Obama and the Pelosipalosers in Congress were "God's answer." Pelosi and other extremist liberals like Tonko get elected to Congress DESPITE their failure to follow Church teaching on key issues -- because many Catholics just vote for other Catholics because he or she "seems like a nice person" and is a Catholic. Thankfully, Catholics in this area are waking up and deciding that they will NOT cast a vote for ANY politician who votes against Catholic Church teaching on key issues. Thankfully, Catholics in this area are speaking up more and challenging those Catholic politicians to their faces -- asking questions and expressing their disappointment at the the Catholic politician's poor voting record on key issues. Unfortunately, at least one of those Catholic politicians, who votes against Church teaching on key issues, will just turn his/her back on his/her constituents and not allow him/herself to hear an opposing view point.

You're right, they performed marriages. There is no distinction in the eyes of the state - same sex or heterosexual marriage, it doesn't matter. Their participation in validating state marriage licenses lends credibility to the redefined state marriage license.
And now with the Catholic parishioners(actually all sects of Christianity) so addicted to the state and state entitlements like social security, medicare, medicaid, and the array of all other benefits, the Catholic church MUST sign these marriage licenses because the state benefits that come with legally recognized marriage trump any moral stand the Church would take to fight back against the state. If they refused to sign state marriage licenses, they would be out of the business of marriage and lose even MORE Catholics to the secular state.
Christians now worship the state more than their God. They have fallen for the promises of gifts from man through government largess. That is more important than adhering to any bible commandment.

The Bible says to render to God what belongs to God and to Caesar what belongs to Caesar. The Catholic Church performs TRADITIONAL marriages between one man and one woman, and the marriage certificate must be filed with the civil authorities. It wouldn't do any good to create legal nightmares for tens of thousands of couples who were married in the Church by refusing to sign or file the marriage certificate.
As long as the state doesn't try to force the Church marriages that go against Church law and Church teaching. In that case, priests would have to refuse to disobey God and their episcopal superiors.
At the rate things are going, we will reach a point in our lifetimes when people will have to take sides -- the same way that people in the 13 colonies had to took sides in 1775. The oppressors (left-wing nut politicians) are driving wedges in this nation and pushing our country to the edge.
