Why is it that GOP elected officials have a change of heart when one of their children are gay?

Quoted Text
Ohio Sen. Rob Portman stunned Washington on Thursday when he told a local Ohio
newspaper, The Cincinnati Enquirer, that he has had a “change of heart” on the issue of
same-sex marriage. “I’ve come to the conclusion that for me, personally, I think this is
something that we should allow people to do, get married.” A co-sponsor of the controversial
1996 Defense of Marriage Act, Portman says the reversal of his stance on gay marriage began
when his son Will told him that he was gay in 2011. The Ohio native says he is now approaching
the topic “from the position of a father” who wants all his children, including his son, to
be able to get married.

Portman joins Newt Gingrich, Dick Cheney and other Republicans who only support
gay marriage if they have a personal interest.

I'm headed to Europe for work, so travel agency always sends any "issues" we might encounter...got this one today!
Quoted Text
France: Opponents of proposed same-sex marriage legislation to demonstrate in Paris on 24 March
Localised travel disruption should be anticipated in the capital Paris on 24 March during a rally against the passage of a proposed bill legalising same-sex marriage. The demonstrators will march simultaneously at 13.00 (local time) from Place Vauban, Place de l'Opéra and Porte Dauphine towards Champs-Élysées. The protesters will reach Champs-Élysées at 14.00 and plan to remain there until their demands are addressed.
The organisers have called upon protesters from across the country to gather for the event. Previous events, such as nationwide demonstrations on 2 February, have attracted thousands of people. The bill is to be presented to the Senate on 2 April for discussion.
Travel Advice
•     Precedents suggest that the upcoming demonstration will be well attended. As such, expect localised traffic disruption along the route on 24 March. The authorities could implement road closures and diversions along the path of the parade and deploy additional police officers to undertake crowd-control measures.
•     Where possible plan journeys circumventing the aforementioned areas. Personnel should leave extra time for important journeys.
•     Some counter-demonstrations by groups opposed to this campaign may also take place during the day. Avoid all demonstrations due to the risk of localised disturbances.
•     Monitor the local media and our travel security alerts on France for further updates.

If people would no longer accept that the states recognition of marriage as the legal definition of marriage, this problem goes away.  But since it is in the states best interest to grant the rights of marriage they can continue to divide people into opposing groups and the politicians can be the referee.  It's sad to see people clamor for the state to validate and grant the right for their personal relationship.  As if it means something.  It's meaningless.

EXACTLY....social engineering at it's worst...but humans seem to seek validation from the system....

just like when Aaron was left with the masses while moses went up the mount and they made the golden calf or when the
people asked for a king and 'god' really tried to talk them out of it.

I'd say it's a socially engineered inferiority complex that is well fertilized in the public school systems and the
fiat system in place....

A new ABC News/Washington Post poll finds support for gay marriage is now 58%, a new high,
"marking a dramatic change in public attitudes on the subject across the past decade."
A 2004 survey showed 32 percent supported gay marriage in  2004 survey of registered voters.

In a section of the project called “Demographic Partners,” The GOP Posts:

Quoted Text
For the GOP to appeal to younger voters, we do not have to agree on every issue,
but we do need to make sure young people do not see the Party as totally intolerant of
alternative points of view. Already, there is a generational difference within the conservative
movement about issues involving the treatment and the rights of gays — and for many
younger voters, these issues are a gateway into whether the Party is a place they want to be.

If our Party is not welcoming and inclusive, young people and increasingly other voters will
continue to tune us out. The Party should be proud of its conservative principles, but just
because someone disagrees with us on 20 percent of the issues, that does not mean we
cannot come together on the rest of the issues where we do agree.

For the Right Wingers on the board, that translates to:
Dear Gays: Republicans Still Hate You, Just More Quietly

why? because then who would show up at all the fund raisers and voting booths.....

PS....marriage shouldn't be sanctioned by the government regardless of this stupid conversation....the elephant in the room
are the 'benefits' and where the government/legislators/lawyers tell you that you can do with your $$/entitlements etc....

it REALLY has NOTHING to do with marriage.....

GET IT!!! think BIIIIIIIIIGGER PICTURE!

First off, I'm really impressed with Justice Scalia. That guy is insane smart. Wait until 40 min mark.

Second, listen to the arguments then make your judgement.

I listened, to me Scalia simply avoids the big question of fairness and tries to argue the definition of words, I'm guessing you were a huge fan of Clinton questioning the definition of the word is too? He keeps trying to find a legal loophole to get to the conclusion he is looking for, to avoid having to write an opinion that will make him seem like a Bigot in the history books.

As to all those that are saying the government shouldn't be involved in marriage, ok I could get on board with that, but let's be realistic, it isn't going to happen. At this point this argument is just a diversion so that people that don't want gays to have the same marriage rights as all of us can avoid the topic. It's the oldest trick in the book, when you don't want to answer a question, simply question the question and divert, then repeat.

This is all so silly, let everyone get married and be done with it. It won't make you gay, or have to hang out with gays, or too even like gays. It's legal here and what damage has been done?

Interesting arguments. It appears that if the court decides the states have no rights to restrict marriage,
that polygamy and incest will likely be deemed constitutional rights.

Analysis: Gay marriage rights may carry bigger U.S. tax burden for some
WASHINGTON | Thu Mar 28, 2013 6:48pm EDT

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - If the U.S. Supreme Court strikes down a federal law defining marriage as between a man and woman, the newfound rights for gay married couples may bear something not so welcome - a bigger tax burden.

That's because with equality, gay couples will face the same tax woes of many heterosexual couples with similar incomes, including the tax hit known in America as the marriage penalty.

Taxpayers filing as married couples may be forced to pay higher taxes as their collective income crosses into a higher tax bracket sooner than if they were filing separately.

Oral arguments on Wednesday gave gay marriage backers hope the court would overturn the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) after a majority of the nine justices raised concerns about the law's validity under the U.S. Constitution.

Taxes are at the very heart of the challenge to DOMA.................................>>>>.................................>>>>.................................http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/03/28/us-usa-court-gaymarriage-taxes-idUSBRE92R12020130328
