"Schenectady County legislature to name new Metroplex chair
In a special meeting Jan 16, the Schenectady County Legislature plans to name Schenectady resident Ray Gillen as chair of the Schenectady Development Authority and as the county's Commissioner of Planning. Gillen would replace current Metroplex chair John Manning, who has headed up the economic development agency since its inception in 1998.
Susan Savage (D-Schenenectady), chair of the County Legislature, said she is very confident Gillen will be approved for both roles. The Legislatrure will also appoint or reappoint four other people to the metroplex board.
As the county's planning commissioner, Gillen would make 130,000, up from the $90,320 paid to David Atkins, who has retired. The Metroplex position is unpaid.
Among other economic development projects, Savage credits Gillen with putting together the deal that had discount retailer Target Corp. last year take over the distribution center in the Montgomery County town of Florida that Kmart left unfinished when it filed for bankruptcy in January 2002. In the past three years, Gillen has facilitated deals bringing more than $1 billion in investments and more than 4,000 jobs to upstate New York, she said.
Appointing Gillen as both planning commissioner and metroplex chair will allow the city and county of Schenectady to consolidate economic development planning, effectively using all available resources, Savage said. The city and county will also streamline planning staff positions, saving about $150,00 a year.
Gillen is expected to take over as planning commissioner Feb. 16 and as Metroplex chair Feb 1. He declined to say what, if any, staff or priority changes he would make at Metroplex."
So back in 2004 he's making $130,000 (up from his $90k predecessor) and within eight years he's at $162,283?
Quite the racket there in the Plex camp. Wonder how much his pension/retirement/medical/health benefits have cost the taxpayers as well.
"The city and county will also streamline planning staff positions, saving about $150,00 a year."
That $150,000 savings??? Right into Gillen's pocket.
LOVE the 4,000 job creation number the County and City failed to prove time and time again. |
