SCHENECTADY — The city's golf professional, who ran the Schenectady Municipal Golf Course for nine years, sent a sour letter to the mayor and City Council last week before leaving his job.

Brian Damon detailed a list of complaints including that "concessions" weren't made to him after course profits were stripped from him in 2011 and that the city should have an assistant golf professional.

"I've reached a level of stress, even in the off-season, which has made it difficult to focus on simple tasks," Damon wrote.

Addressing Mayor Gary McCarthy, he continued, "You haven't been behind me since you decided to run for mayor. Instead, you put non-golfers and people that were unfamiliar with a retail operation, and you continued to let them harass me despite my call for help."

WHERE in the U.S. constitution does it say that citizens are ENTITLED to a golf course at taxpayer expense?

Leave the golf courses to the clubs.

It's Schenectady - the government golf course, the government gym, the government pools.   Waiting for Schenectady to open a bowling alley.

McC and his dems - the socialists

Galesi and Proctors would have to approve it first.

sounds like a law suit may be pending.

if this was a private sector golf course....his wages wouldn't have ever been this high UNLESS profits allowed for it.

it would never hit the media outlets.

the city officials set themselves up for this.

people get fired, let go, laid off EVERY SINGLE DAY in the private sector and ya never read about it in the paper.

The guy is probably right to be upset from his standpoint because McCheese is probably not holding up his end of whatever deal they made. From the taxpayer standpoint, this harrassment is probably being done to get a hack of McCheese's choosing in there. If there is "a lot of interest" in the job, he must be going to hand it out to a non-resident.

Is the Schenectady golf course open to anyone or just Schenectady residents?

Who pays for the golf course, the city or the county?

The guy gets $75k plus benefits, with only a high school diploma. Wanna quit? Good, and good luck getting another deal like THAT.
I hear Walmart is hiring.
He's just mad he isn't making $150k, like he used to, for working at a friggin golf course.

Fire his a$$, and let him see what the real world is like.

Kinda funny you say that. If he moves to N.Dakota, the starting wage at Wal-Mart is around $17/hr....Adds up to a little over $48k/year

Yes, and spend fully half that on rent.
You're only hearing half the story.

Or if he goes to the Walmart in Rotterdam, he can qualify for food stamps.
But that's OK, I just love subsidising Walmart's unbridled greed by providing social services to the fully 80% of their workforce that qualifies for it.

I'd love to see the math that makes $17/hr equal $48k/year.  Are they 50 hour work weeks?

The last I knew, the course was open to all, but cheaper for Schenectady residents. The city/county involvement, I'm not sure of, it's the city's course. Iknow some golfers liked it as a less fancy but less expensive place to play, but you can't have that, an amenity for the people who have lived here for decades. Oh no. We only can concern ourselves with non-residents who call the shots, and potential new, more desirable apartment dwellers downtown.
Some of the opinions expressed in the TU about various idiot ideas from Schenectady politicians really make me burn. People who have absolutely no idea what it is like here, they have never been here, weighing in on what is wrong here and disparaging everything about the place. Even people who havelived here 5 minutes thinking that they are the experts and the saviours. Present company excepted. Rotterdamians know the city and are very affected by what happens here, as evidenced by this website.
I'm still smoldering over that "urban pioneer" crap being discussed by the ignorami. The woman who writes that Schenectady blog for the TU made somevery ignorant and insulting remarks regarding another waste of money going on downtown, some apartments. I should know better than to even look at that blog.

should be privatized

"While Foreign Terrorists were plotting to murder and maim using homemade bombs in Boston, Democrap officials in Washington DC, Albany and here were busy watching ME and other law abiding American Citizens who are gun owners and taxpayers, in an effort to blame the nation's lack of security on US so that they could have a political scapegoat."

I think it could be run by the city as an amenity for the residents without cost to the non-golfers, but what I really mean is that such a course could be run by A city, but not this one, because our government's only concern with it is what hack can they get in there to rip off the residents and run it into the ground.
