ALBANY – Albany County and Schenectady County Community College have reached an agreement that will allow the college to set up a satellite in downtown Albany.

County Executive Dan McCoy announced from the Cahill Room at the Albany County office building on Thursday that the county will allow SCCC to use 10,000 square feet on the second floor of the county's State Street headquarters and expects 1,000 students will take advantage of programs there. The county and SCCC are negotiating a lease for the space.

McCoy said the move will be a win for both higher education and the economic development of downtown Albany.

"It's not just about getting the students downtown. It's about getting Albany on the map," McCoy said. "This is going to be what our economy needs."

Those who attend classes at the satellite will be able to park their cars in a garage on the west side of the Times Union Center. Also, a CDTA ridership program will provide free bus transportation from outside the county building to SCCC's main campus.

"I'm anticipating that this is a convenience that will bring many students to downtown Albany," McCoy said.

This is a great idea.

As for the argument that that the college gets its funding from just Schenectady County -- the FACT is that community colleges get part of their funding from the state and it is not unusual for 2 or more counties to cooperate when it comes to community college.

ANYTHING that broadens the market and marketability of Schenectady County Community College should be considered a good thing.

ANYTHING that expands cooperation between local governments (municipal, county, fire districts, school districts, etc.)  should be considered a VERY GOOD THING.

Of course, DV who does NOT PAY TAXES is going to spew all this nonsense babble shaking those pom poms to hike the taxes on the taxpayers.

Have you found any EVIDENCE yet of your claim that county taxes are the lowest in 50 years????    Huh?   Well, have you?????

And why is it you ONLY post here when there's something going on that will result an increase in taxes to those of us who pay taxes?????

Yah because we need to increase the traffic in downtown Albany.  Too much traffic in Our downtown and we are running out of spare office space.  What a joke!

Did you even read the article?  It's very clear that EVERYTHING about this is an advantage for ALBANY.

Except for their constant desire to criticize, attack and be negative about  EVERYTHING that happens in the world -- the critics of this proposal (nayboobs) don't have a anything to back up their criticism except that they don't like it.  In that sense, they are nothing better than a spoiled 2 year old constantly saying No - No - No to everything.

This Albany satellite campus is a great idea for SCCC.  It spotlights the tremendous success that SCCC has been over the years and the great leadership provided by the college's and the counties'  (Albany and Schenectady)  leadership.

The Renaissance Continues !!!!!!

Of course it is a well documented FACT that you will NOT respond and address the TRUTHS.   YOU are NOT a taxpayer.   We, who are taxpayers, pay for SCCC.

This will be students who will go to Albany and spend money IN ALBANY

So explain how, after we taxpayers subsidize SCCC and the students get low cost tuition because we subsidize their tuition and then they take the money and go a location IN ALBANY and then spend money at stores and businesses IN ALBANY.

How does that help Schenectady?

Of course, not that there are any businesses to spend money in Schenectady anyway

But DV, answer the question:   how is it good when students who are subsidized with SCHENECTADY taxpayers' money attend classes IN ALBANY and spend their money IN ALBANY????      Can you answer that??????

Tell us about the renaissance by the way.

You STILL REFUSE to answer what has happened to the tax base in Schenectady, what ha happened to home values, why are people fleeing the city in droves, how come the taxpayer funded, tax exempt apartments downtown pretty  much vacant, what has happened to the crime rate in Schenectady, the poverty rate in Schenectady????   Of course IT IS A WELL DOCUMENTED FACT that you will NOT answer those questions!!!!!!

So in other words, you can't comprehend that:
a) Albany County will have to make payments TO Schenectady County for each Albany County student that attends SCCC
b) more students will be able to attend SCCC programs which will INCREASE the revenue generated from tuition and fees
c) the proposal INCREASES the "market area"  for SCCC and ENHANCES its position as a REGIONAL ACADEMIC CENTER
d) the proposal is a signal that Schenectady and Albany Counties are WORKING TOGETHER to coordinate and improve service delivery which means MORE COST EFFECTIVE government for the the tax payers dollars.

So it is a TREMENDOUS VALUE to BOTH   Albany and Schenectady Counties.

Actually, we are NOT saying "no no" to everything.   We say " no no" to the use of OUR TAX MONEY when we get NOTHING IN RETURN!!!!!!   And I DEFY you to provide EVIDENCE of what the taxpayers are getting in return for their  money.   Come on, don't be such a big chicken, tell us what taxpayers are getting in return for paying the highest taxes in the country.   Can you do that?   Of course not, because you can't provide one teeny weeny shred of EVIDENCE of ANYTHING that the taxpayers are getting in return for their money. And THAT is why YOU REFUSE TO ANSWER!!!!!!!

Do your colleages on the planning committee know what a dimwit you are?   Do they know that you are shaking your pom poms for increased taxes and plummeting home values?    Perhaps they should visit these boards and see what a no-nothing you are.

By the way, where is the financial disclosure about you?????

So in other words, you can't comprehend that:
a) Albany County will have to make payments TO Schenectady County for each Albany County student that attends SCCC Only if they go to SCCC in Sch'dy. They only pay if the student goes OUT OF THE COUNTY...last I knew SCCC IS NOT in Albany COUnty...so you are wrong (AGAIN)!
b) more students will be able to attend SCCC programs which will INCREASE the revenue generated from tuition and fees
c) the proposal INCREASES the "market area"  for SCCC and ENHANCES its position as a REGIONAL ACADEMIC CENTER
d) the proposal is a signal that Schenectady and Albany Counties are WORKING TOGETHER to coordinate and improve service delivery which means MORE COST EFFECTIVE government for the the tax payers dollars. NO, it means savings for ALBANY COUNTY and no $$ increased into the SCHDY CTY coffers.

So it is a TREMENDOUS VALUE to BOTH   Albany and Schenectady Counties.

Quoted Text
Though a lease has not been finalized, school officials said they anticipate paying $12 a square foot, or about $120,000 a year, to lease the space. Plans include six classrooms as well as administrative offices.

So SCHDY Taxpayers are footing a large part of a $120k lease bill...will ROI for tuitinons rec'd balance taht out or are we IN THE BIG RED HOLE!!!!
Raise your POM POMS all you want, but you obviously know nothing about balancing expenditures and returning profits. You only know what BS you hear.  If this was your money being spent, you would be bankrupt within days!!!!!!!

DV, care to tell us when you are going to get off your butt and get a job so you can become a taxpayer at the federal and state tax level (income tax).

DV, care to tell us when you are going to become a taxpayer at the city and county level by buying a house, or even renting, IN the ctiy?

Care to provide us any EVIDENCE of your claim that county taxes are lower than 50 years ago?

Care to provide any EVIDENCE of benefits to the residents of the city and their neighborhoods since your socialists took over the city, county, and plex?

No answer of course, because you can't provide any evidence because there is none.   More of your fairy tales just like your fairy tale friends (your imaginary friends)
