It is one of the WORST economic blackmail policies. Taxpayers pump millions into a theater which in turn cost the taxpayers millions to keep afloat (with grants and taxbreaks) which in turn keeps afloat Downtown businesses which pay no taxes, decimate the taxbase and use Metroplex grants to stay afloat.

Therefore if we had true capitalism Downtown and each theater and business were cut off the government support?? Every single Downtown entity would not be able to survive.

So what's the answer? Pumping millions into a Downtown which is bleeding the taxbase and taxpayers...or an empty Downtown which doesn't take millions from the taxpayers? A ghost town has a chance to be reborn, our current situation has no chance of ever being successful.

It is no different than the STIMULUS/TARP ETC.....Taxpayer's money plundered to prop up a 'fake' economy.....and the taxpayers are bleeding to death....we can't afford it anymore!! There is no capitalism...all major companies have crossed that big mass of salty water for cheaper labor, higher profits, less environmental laws and low to no taxes paid by them.

We are now living in the 'new socialistic AMERICA'!!

Why do they let Morris make these high stakes decisions downtown? He has no kind of credentials whatsoever for it, and the other city where he was allowed to hold sway showed no improvement. How are people who should know better so impressed?

C'mon he is an expert on illegal double stars and how to win Patroon awards. Of course it will go to Proctor's because no one else wants it. Parker Inn is another Big Hose a taxpayer black hole. The funny thing
will be watching the media stooges led by the Gazetto spin this no sale as some kind of renaissance event. There are hundreds of properties for sale in the City with no buyers. And hundreds more have been taken off the market until "things improve". A know someone who has been waiting 10 years for "improvement". Things will only get worse as the gap between tanked revenues and increased spending widens.

This is the sad tale of the entire City. Proctors/Non-profits/Tax-exempt businesses and even tax-exempt landlords are swallowing up all the real estate leaving the dwindling taxbase in complete disrepair.

Schenectady has sold its soul ...there's not much left ...

Downtown is a Ponzi scheme. I went to Proctor's yesterday for the Schenectady Symphony. The symphony was nice, one of the good things we still have left, but it was sad, seeing the expensive changes Morris has made to that place that add no value to the city, and seeing how the symphony is reallyunderfunded while we involuntarily contribute to some crappy businesses instead.
Nowhere to go when the show got out at five, really. Dismal.

Well said Madam!

Doesn't it make your skin crawl thinking that hundreds of thousands of the taxayers money went into refurbishing a gold ceiling, yet the Hill is being ignored, Bellevue is turning into a haven for the homeless/porn shops/welfare regulars and the potholes on Erie keep getting bigger.

Sad...so sad.

Well said.

And DV thinks fancy lighting on Erie Blvd is going to turn the city around.  Yet can't provide one teeny weeny shred of EVIDENCE that the taxpayer funded gold ceiling in Proctors has resulted in an increased tax base in the city; he can't provide one teeny weeny shred of EVIDENCE that ANY taxpayer funded dem projects downtown have resulted in ANY ROI for the taxpayers---not one teeny weeny shred of EVIDENCE that the homeowners are realizing increased home values along with a reduced tax burden.   He has not provided one teeny weeny shred of EVIDENCE that people are buying homes in the city, not one teeny weeny shred of EVIDENCE that houses are selling for what the city claims that they would sell for, not one teeny weeny shred of EVIDENCE that people are choosing to stay in the city rather than putting houses up for sale.

And DV REFUSES -- ABSOLUTELY REFUSES -- to buy a house IN the city.

He REFUSES to move INTO the city that he claims is so wonderful.

And he REFUSES TO EXPLAIN WHY HE REFUSES TO BUY A HOME IN THE CITY!    TOOOO CHICKEN to admit it would be a major finacial falure to do so.   Wait he is unemployed, couldn't get approved for a mortgage, can't even afford to rent and live like a NORMAL adult man!
