"Fire officials said the building was supposed to be vacant but three people actually lived there. They all got out safe."
What the he** does that mean?!? A property owner illegally had tenant or the place was condemned or the City Code people ordered it? Really, who said it was 'supposed' to be vacant?
There was a caretaker there, when you look at the google pic the third floor boarded but the second had an air conditioner and satelite TV. Looks like it was being rented out, unbelievable.
SCHENECTADY — An overloaded extension cord in a second-floor apartment that had several electrical appliances plugged into it ignited a fire that forced authorities to shut down a busy stretch of State Street for several hours Friday, Fire Chief Michael Della Rocco said.
City fire investigators also discovered a generator on the second floor of the four-story brick building where two people had been living even though it supposed to be vacant, the chief said.
A third person, who the Syracuse-area owner told fire investigators took care of the building, lived on the third floor. The occupants were not home when the fire started around 5:30 p.m. Thusday at 245 State St., Della Rocco said.
The fire traveled up the stairwell into an adjoining building in the rear, he added.
"There is a great deal of fire damage in the rear because the wind was traveling in the direction," Della Rocco said.
A sign painted on one side of the brick building reads "Patton and Hall Shoes and Hosiery." It was apparently once operated as a fitness facility and houses a full-size wrestling ring on the third floor, the chief said.
The chief said investigators were also trying to determine the cause of a house fire Thursday night in the attic of 1009 Strong St. in Hamilton Hill.
Fire crews arrived to find flames shooting out of the front attic window and confined the blaze to the attic. The home was supposed to be empty, but there was evidence it had been inhabited, the chief said.
Don't suppose the city could do something intelligent like shut water off to buildings that don't have a certificate of occupancy?
Then, the residents could have just been some of downtown's "wonderful" people, the typical vagrants and winos.
Optimists close their eyes and pretend problems are non existent. Better to have open eyes, see the truths, acknowledge the negatives, and speak up for the people rather than the politicos and their rich cronies.

Well, there must of been National Grid accounts, mail has been delivered...etc.
This landlord must have been paying his taxes or he's a card-carrying DEM...no reason to question his 'vacant' building right?? Guess the City officials have become "Popolizioed".
