PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
Founder, Chairman, and President of Help Yourself Foundation (2005-Present)
Established foundation to broaden the pipeline to college for at-risk students by creating
after-school academies on college campuses for grade-school children, based on the successful Beloit College model
Presently, 11 academies in operation nationally from CT to WY, with a minimum of three
academies to be added annually
President of Union College and Chancellor of Union University (1990-2005)
Raised $250 million that resulted in tripling of endowment, 24 new or renovated facilities, and 15 endowed chairs
Expanded terms abroad to 28 countries, with 65% of students studying abroad
Increased applications by 50% and significantly increased quality of applications
Created Charles Steinmetz research symposium, where 15% of student body presents original research
Promoted student volunteer efforts in Schenectady, with 60% participation
Made largest investment in city as percentage of assets ($26 million) of any college in America, including acquisition and renovation of 50 properties
Developed model alcohol policy
Created program in Converging Technologies
Co-founded USTART business incubator
Formed Minerva House System, a unique learning/ living environment for all faculty and students
