Raising money for who?
By David Lombardo
Friday, December 21, 2012
Professional fundraisers kept more than half the money raised in 2011 for charities in New York state, according to a report from the state Attorney General’s Charities Bureau.
In 2011, about $4.7 million was raised for Capital Region charities, which received less than 40 percent of the funds. The rest of the money went to the professional fundraisers, including Scotia-based Capital District Callers Inc. and Clifton Park-based Nordel Publishing Inc. The report can be found below.
“New Yorkers expect that their hard-earned dollars will make a difference and not line the pockets of for-profit fundraisers at the expense of charity,” Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said in a statement.
His office has issued more than a dozen subpoenas in investigations targeting fundraising campaigns that have repeatedly not yielded much for the associated charities.
“During this season of giving, when so many are still struggling to recover from Sandy, the generosity of donors must be protected," Schneiderman said. "With this report, New Yorkers will be equipped with important information to help them decide which charities to support and to help ensure their contributions further charitable programs and services.” Local examples: • Saratoga County Deputy Sheriff's PBA - $37,030 raised, $16,663.50 to the charity • Schenectady County Sheriff's Benevolent Association - $22,755 raised, $6,826.50 to the charity • Waterford Emergency Team Inc. - $46,484 raised, $23,242 to the charity • Food Pantries for the Capital District Inc. - $333,838 raised, $200,303 to the charity
The report is based on information from reports filed with the bureau. Last year's results were comparable to the year before, when telemarketing campaigns raised $249 million and about 37 percent of it went to charities.

I think charities are supposed to inform you how much goes to the actual service. Better to give directly to the charities. GuideStar offers some useful information. |

Same thing with schools. The schools and even sometime churches hire a company that is usually out of state for fundraising.
if ya get the call.....come right out and ask them who they are, and if they are a 'fund raising company'. If they are....DON'T DONATE ANYTHING!! |
