Schenectady Police Chief Mark Chaires will become the new executive director of the resurgent Hamilton Hill Arts Center on the same day he hangs up his badge at year's end.
Chaires, who has 25 years on the force and made history as the department's first black chief, is retiring on Dec. 31 to focus on finishing up his doctoral degree in criminal justice at the University at Albany.
