New model for health insurance
Private insurers are starting to build exchanges in anticipation of change

For most working people, choosing a health plan is a little like prison food: You take what you get.

The federal Affordable Health Care Act, aka Obamacare, may change that starting in October, when government-run insurance exchanges will offer workers at small businesses a place to shop for health insurance. If successful, the exchanges may shift how employers provide health insurance to their employees.

Recognizing the change, some private insurers are leaping into the game early by building exchanges, which are basically storefronts where people can select a plan. Schenectady-based MVP, for example, launched its own exchange late last month.
