Medical Tyranny is Here, And We Can’t Say We Weren’t Warned
Daniel Taylor, Contributor
Activist Post

Health care reform is a hot topic today, as it has been for much of America’s history. Benjamin Rush, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, warned in 1787 that medical freedom needed to be included in the American Constitution.

Without this protection, Rush warned that the medical establishment would naturally progress – as many of mankind’s institutions do – into an oppressive dictatorship. His words, echoing from over 200 years ago, ring strikingly true today:

The Constitution of this Republic should make special provision for medical freedom. To restrict the art of healing to one class will constitute the Bastille of medical science. All such laws are un-American and despotic. … Unless we put medical freedom into the constitution the time will come when medicine will organize into an undercover dictatorship and force people who wish doctors and treatment of their own choice to submit to only what the dictating outfit offers.
The spirit of managerial scientific control that drives this beast is summarized in the words of Frederick Taylor, a pioneer in “scientific management.” As Taylor stated in 1907, "Too great liberty results in a large number of people going wrong who would be right if they had been forced into good habits." This spirit of quasi-altruistic scientific control begins to fade away towards the higher ranks of the system, however.

The potential for medical tyranny that Benjamin Rush perceived over 200 years ago crystallized when the Rockefeller and Carnegie foundations transformed the American medical establishment in the early 20th Century. They strove to create a system of schooling to manufacture a predictable, rule following group of professionals to enforce the establishment regulations. Additionally, tax exempt foundations – through their grant making power – are able to mold the idea-sphere from which medical research emerges, or is suppressed.

Wrong.

There can only be one dictator and that will be the government when they begin the systematic takeover of healthcare in 2014.

You can change insurers and change doctors, but try changing governments. You will see...

"While Foreign Terrorists were plotting to murder and maim using homemade bombs in Boston, Democrap officials in Washington DC, Albany and here were busy watching ME and other law abiding American Citizens who are gun owners and taxpayers, in an effort to blame the nation's lack of security on US so that they could have a political scapegoat."

The best thing that could happen to this country is single payer.

Nahhhh...global single payer would be the best.  People could leave the country for their healthcare, we can't have that.  Or we could restrict passport to prevent people with money from getting care outside the system.  A combination of both options would be great.

While I have little faith in the US government, I have even less in insurance companies. I used to work for one. We were trained to find any loophole possible to decline a claim, aka, they signed on 9 of only 10 lines, declined. Also if we didn't find enough claims to deny we were sent to retraining as they had percentages that we were to meet. I'll never forget talking to a woman, who's son had committed suicide after we denied his treatment because it was "experimental", even though she had multiple doctors recommending it, including the specialist we told her to go see. Worst job I ever had, couldn't sleep at night.

UnitedHealthcare's myHealthcare Cost Estimator Offers Consumers Maximum Accuracy for Health Care Comparison Shopping

MINNETONKA, Minn. (June 5, 2012) – UnitedHealthcare has launched myHealthcare Cost Estimator, a new integrated online service that brings a retail shopping experience to health care and helps consumers find quality care while being able to estimate the cost of more than 100 common treatments and procedures with maximum accuracy. Estimates are also personalized to reflect an individual's own health plan benefits, including their real-time account balances when applicable.

The new online service is more precise than calculators that may only rely on old claims data, and often from only a handful of employers. myHealthcare Cost Estimator, available to more than 14 million people enrolled in UnitedHealthcare health benefits plans, draws on the company's actual contracted rates with physicians, hospitals, clinics and other health care providers in 47 markets, giving consumers highly accurate pricing estimates.

"myHealthcare Cost Estimator meets a longstanding consumer need for thorough but simple online comparison shopping for health care by putting relevant information right at people's fingertips," said Yasmine Winkler, chief product & marketing officer, UnitedHealthcare. "myHealthcare Cost Estimator enables people to make better care decisions, by better understanding their treatment options, comparing services, and anticipating future costs."

By building "care paths," the online tool creates a comprehensive view of what the consumer should expect throughout their course of treatment, from the time they first visit the doctor, to the test or procedure, and all the way through to physical therapy or any necessary follow-up care. Quality and cost information is directly connected to in-network hospitals and physicians, and alternate treatment options are provided so consumers can have an informed conversation with their physician.

Collaboration with care providers is critically important when building cost estimators and other consumer support tools to ensure they enhance the overall patient experience – and accurately portray expected costs and treatment options – rather than putting unnecessary focus on just costs.

"UnitedHealthcare's myHealthcare Cost Estimator is the kind of innovation that can enhance access to quality care by helping people become more savvy health care consumers," said Clint Hailey, chief managed care officer, Tenet Healthcare. "Transparency in quality and cost information is key to not only empowering individual patients and their families, but also helping to improve our nation's health care system."

UnitedHealthcare plan participants access the tool online at http://www.myuhc.com. Later this year, myHealthcare Cost Estimator will be integrated into Health4Me, UnitedHealthcare's mobile app for iPhone and Android smartphones that helps people with employer-sponsored benefits plans access important health care information on their mobile devices.

A Simple Yet Comprehensive Shopping Experience

myHealthcare Cost Estimator was created based on months of consumer, employer and care provider feedback to ensure a simple, intuitive experience. Key features include:
cost estimates for more than 47 geographic areas covering more than 100 different treatments and procedures, such as surgeries, lab tests, radiology tests and office visits;
ability to compare quality and cost information for 240,000 different physicians and hospitals;
cost estimates that are tailored to a plan participant's specific benefits plan design that identify what will be owed out-of-pocket, costs that will be paid by their employer, and real-time account balances available in an eligible health care account to pay toward the expenses;
ability to assemble cost estimates by matching physicians with the specific facilities where they practice;
presentation of common alternate treatment options to educate patients on their choices; and
educational information about how their benefits work and how costs are determined.

The tool provides estimates based on available fee schedules and actual contracted rates with care providers, and if that information is not available estimates are based on previous claims with the care provider. myHealthcare Cost Estimator builds on the success of UnitedHealthcare's Treatment Cost Estimator, which was created more than five years ago to help consumers understand how costs differ from doctor to doctor and comparison shop for health services.
