Much illegal activity taking place in Woodlawn Preserve

    Hunting season is again open in certain areas of New York state, but hunting is not allowed at any time in the Schenectady or Niskayuna (Stanford Park) portions of the Woodlawn Preserve.
    Motorized vehicles are also prohibited in all areas of the preserve.
    In spite of this, there are several tree stands that exist within the preserve, and the sound of gunshots, both day and night, are being reported from area residents. Both hunters and ATVs have been seen entering the Fillmore Avenue (Niskayuna) entrance at about 7 p.m. Evidence of illegal activities, including ATV tracks, fires, arrows from illegal bow hunting and spent bullet casings, are regularly observed by hikers in the preserve.
    We are told that a regular patrol is cost-prohibitive, but calling the police when the activity is observed is often met with no response. In spite of this, we encourage area residents to call police non-emergency numbers (Schenectady, 382-5264; Niskayuna, 374-3159) to report incidents.
    Hunting after dark is prohibited in all areas of New York state, and should be reported to DEC offi cer Jason DeAngelis at 346-4580. These activities pose a danger to those who live around the preserve and to those that are in the preserve to enjoy its beauty.
We would hope that with enough
expressed concern, something will be
done to curtail the illegal activities.

Reporting shots fired brings no response? What happens when it's reported nurmeous times and the police continue to ignore
the calls and then someone is killed or injured?

Guess it would be time to call the "heavy hitters" !

It really is a shame though. It could be more relaxing and peaceful if you didn't have the ATV trails and some of the dumping
that goes on. Just having to look at that ruins what otherwise would be a nice experience. It could be an oasis right inside the city for a quick escape.

You'd think the city would clean it up and promote the area. Oh, wait, that only happens downtown.

Thanks Gary. Now I feel unsafe going in there as I sometimes do with my dogs. This really pisses me off.

It would be tremendous if some diligent hunters would actually venture OUT of the Woodlawn Preserve and find a way to track and hunt nayboobs.. Unfortunately -- they are so full of sh*t -- that they would be too heavy to put on the roof rack.

I'm thinking our own little Running of the 'BULLS'....PITBULLS that is.....round up ALL loose dogs and dogs with complaints filed...
let them loose in the preserve with a bunch of folks in tree stands with bows/arrows and guns and LET 'EM RIP!!!!!!
