To me - and this is just my experience where I'd have a limited number of qualified people applying, not the 50 you might have today...

The resume got people "in the door" to talk with me.  It was how they performed in a phone screen or an in-person interview, that really determined the success of the candidate.

It might be different with the jobs the OP is posting for, or it may also be that they don't know the characteristics employers are going to be impressed by during an interview.  Or it could simply be there are so many people applying, a significant number of them do pretty well during the interview and then the resume really is what makes the difference.

I have heard stories of lazy HR types who use any excuse to toss a resume just to narrow the number of applicants they have to deal with. It isn't good business, making a few keywords on paper matter more than an in-person evaluation, but they probably figure that they are getting so many qualified applicants nowadays that even if they miss some good ones they still have enough to choose from. So, yes, do make sure that resume is everything it can be. This is hard, I know from my friend's recent experience.
You sound like someone who catches on quickly and is willing to do what it takes, so the trick is to persevere until you finally can get in to see someone who will recognize and appreciate those qualities.
One of the major retailers in the area actually let a sixteen year old girl make the final decision on whether my friend would be hired. I kid you not.

it's all about 'earning your stripes'......some folks get over-educated by their experience....they can't even go to college in their field...
because the cost isn't worth it in the end....

validation by society standards and there are a bunch of lawyers/legal eagles to make sure of it....

I have hired hundreds of employees. I have seen hundreds of applications and resumes.

One resume sticks in my mind. The applicant wrote across the top of the resume using a pen:

I have not missed a scheduled day of work in over 10 years.

I set the pile aside and called this man to come right in.

Good tip! Maybe I can put something up there like it as well. I haven't missed an unscheduled day in quite a while either. Maybe not 10 years, but at least 3. Haven't gotten a dismissal yet from AAA, so that's a good sign. Making a few calls to follow up tomorrow, so hopefully something pans out. May be too late to have a good Christmas, but still time to ring in the New Year on a positive note.

Extra welfare money for you?   It dawned on me, when he was seen in Shop-Rite two weeks ago, that was the day the welfare chechecks came out because the first fell on a Saturday so checks on Friday.  Yes, that was Chris' day off and Mike took the day off; we beat the weekend crowds to get our tree and on the way back stopped at the store; you could ask to see store security tapes of the parking lot and you'd see our truck with the tree in it!
