Gazette parade to open holiday season Costumer owner chosen to serve as grand marshal Thursday, November 1, 2012 By Kelly de la Rocha Gazette Reporter
SCHENECTADY — Kathe Sheehan has marched in the Gazette Holiday Parade dressed as a gorilla, a clown, a reindeer, and even the back end of a cow. But this time, she’ll appear as something completely different — the parade’s grand marshal.
Sheehan, who owns The Costumer, will kick off the Nov. 17 parade at 5 p.m., riding in a horse-drawn carriage. Next in line will be a Costumer float festooned with 50 costumed characters, and following that will be all sorts of magical things.
More than 100 floats, marching bands, community organizations, businesses and dance troupes are expected to take part in the two-hour-long parade, which is held no matter what the weather.
WHERE: The parade will start at Schenectady County Community College and proceed east on State Street to the corner of Lafayette Street, at the foot of Veterans’ Park.
PARKING: Free parking will be available at:
• The Broadway Parking Garage
• The Broadway Surface Lot
• The lot at the corner of Broadway and Franklin Street
• The Amtrak parking lot at the corner of Erie Boulevard and Liberty Street
• The lot at the corner of Erie Boulevard and Liberty Street North
• Schenectady ARC’s parking lot off South Church Street
• The lot next to Kentucky Fried Chicken, 109 State St., which is accessible from Liberty Street
• The city lot between Liberty and Franklin streets
ROAD CLOSURE: State Street from the Western Gateway Bridge to Nott Terrace will be closed to traffic starting at 4 p.m.
The theme for this year’s event, “Magic and Myths,” is a perfect fit for Sheehan, whose company has outfitted actors, trick-or-treaters and party-goers in creative costumes for 95 years. She wouldn’t reveal much about the premise behind The Costumer’s float, but said it had something to do with theater, and is a take-off on Shakespeare.
“My employees are very enthusiastic about it. They’ve been working on it for a long time,” she said.
Other participants have taken a shine to the parade’s theme as well, said parade coordinator Gail Hopper, of the Chamber of Schenectady County.
“It’s something that people are really excited about. It’s just so popular now — wizards and Harry Potter and all that kind of fantasy,” she said.
There will be plenty to see in the parade, she promised.
“There are some really fancy, professional floats; there are a few like you would see in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, but a lot of them are just great groups who are excited and are a part of the community and just want to be out there. We’ve got everything. We’ve got dancing firemen! It’s just a great event,” she said.
Marching bands, including those from Mohonasen High School, Draper Middle School and Schenectady High School, will fill the night air with music. The Capital District Marching Band and the Empire State Youth Orchestras will make appearances as well, and troupes from the Ferrara Dance Studio and The Dance Studio will show off their fancy footwork along the route.
The parade will end with an appearance by the most magical guy ever to wear a red, velvet suit — Santa Claus. The jolly old elf will ride on a float provided by The Daily Gazette.
No matter what the theme, every year, the parade brings magic to Schenectady, and it’s a great way to showcase the revitalized downtown, said Dan Beck, the Gazette’s general manager...........................>>>>.........................>>>>...............................http://www.dailygazette.com/news/2012/nov/01/gazette-parade-open-holiday-season/

I don't do Holiday Parades only Christmas Parades.
Suppose the "holiday" includes the 'holidays" of both Christmas and New Years... Would that be acceptable, or are you locked into the TeaBaggers definition of a Holiday?

Hanukwanzmas Combining Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanza into a single term. These are the three holidays typically mentioned around this time so it's easier to say them all at once and not be some PC douchebag and say "Happy Holidays". Have a happy Hanukwanzmas!

The original purpose of the parade was for Downtown merchants to bring shoppers downtown and kick off the shopping season before the December holidays ----- and YES -- there is more than one gift-giving holiday during December. Christmas for Christians (and not all Christians celebrate Christmas on December 25 -- heck the Dutch founders of Schenectady exchanged gifts on St. Nicholas Day (Dec 6) not on Christmas Day itself, Hanukkah for Jews. Kwanzaa for those who are so inclined. There really isn't anything wrong with calling it the Holiday Parade. If that is your excuse for not attending the parade than that is YOUR issue and YOUR decision to make. It really isn't worth arguing over.

Well, today there is NO SHOPPING downtown so why bother have a parade? Actually with all the socialist gin mills downtown, the college students and a parade, we might soon see the types of actions Albany had for St Patrick's Day
It's purpose was to kick off the CHRISTMAS shopping season; gift giving was never a major enough part of Hanukkah to warrant a month long shopping frenzy, actually the only "gift" was gelt. Kwanzaa is in invention by a hater of Christmas and Christianity but yet he took most all of the Christmas customs and some from Hanukkah and made them part of Kwanzaa. And these days, there is Hanukkah and Kwanzaa wrapping paper, greeting cards, lights to string on the house (Kwanzaa lights must be the LED lights because at a distance LED lights look like black lights)
But of course, whether it's a Christmas parade or a holiday parade, DV won't venture into the failing city anyway, wouldn't dare walk from a parking lot, wouldn't walk 10 feet, and to stand for three hours? ho ho ho!
Optimists close their eyes and pretend problems are non existent. Better to have open eyes, see the truths, acknowledge the negatives, and speak up for the people rather than the politicos and their rich cronies.
Can't wait to see the float sponsored by the Metroplex. A little rewriting gets this paragraph about the parade spot on.

The theme for this year’s event, “Magic and Myths,” is a perfect fit for the Schenectady Metroplex, who outfitted actors with jobs, pulling tricks as they took treats from the local taxpayers. They wouldn’t reveal how many jobs they have actually helped create, because, in fact, this would be a negative number, the same as the amount that the Metroplex has added to the tax base of the city and county.
so much negativity.....you all need to look into your hearts.....if you have one....and realize......today is a blessing...tmorrow a gift...
regardless of the circumstances.......sound like Oprah??......regardless, the parade is for those who love the Christmas holidays.....so if you don't ....just don't go.....
don';t turn this time of year into political mush......
I love the Holiday season -- can't wait to put up the menorah and the Christmas tree -- and make some latkes and some Christmas pudding.
