Also, pass the word, start a letter writing effort, every place you find a pothole, you write a letter to the law department, cc Engineering, the council, and the mayor, "This hereby notifies you of a pothole at [location] and any damage to my car upon receipt of this notice is the city's responsbility." Send it certified mail, return receipt

UPDATE:
Found out the paving done on Eastern Ave. is the first part of the process. The final step is to lay a thin layer over that. They did that on Eastern the other day.
My question is what about the areas that already were coming up? Is the thin layer going over those holes?
My goodness you should see the dips where the manhole covers are. I bet they are 4" deep it is a war zone going from Nott Terrace up for quite a ways up. If you don't want to drive into them you are all over the street to avoid them.
Since there are so many I am thinking about reporting them officially so that if my car gets damaged they have been informed of the situation. |

That's what happens to a road surface job that's done quick and cheap, it's very expensive to raise the manholes up even with the road surface. Hitting the manholes that are sunk in the road will knock your front end out of allignment. |

Take pictures and send them with a letter. But remember, the only way the city will pay for damage to your car is if you notify them about a pothole BEFORE you go through it. Take a photo of each one, under each photo write the address of the house it is in front of, even better look up the tax ID of the property it is in front of. Then send the letter, "...listed here are the locations of X number: ... This is your notification that pothole exists in the event of the need to file a damage claim...." P.S. post some photos here too and we'll pass them along so others can write such letter. This city has got to learn that they are obligated to provide for the residents of the city BEFORE downtown. If they get bombarded with damage claims, wow In fact, you could also post photos of the potholes on some facebook sites too, like local TV, Proctor's facebook page (include a caption "residents before Proctors), "Marion for council" facebook page. Times Union has place for people to send photos of various stuff too. Invite all who see the photos to write to the city! Safety in numbers and be squeaky wheels (cc: to DV hahaha) |

I have seen some manholes where they reduce the depth by "sanding" the surrounding area and feather it out so it becomes mostly level. Hopefully they will come and take care of it. |

I am going to take the pictures and send the letter with them.
To show the depth of the holes since a picture of them many times does not show just how deep they are I am going to put an apple on top of the manhole to show just how deep these suckers are. When I get them taken I will post here.
Everyone is welcome to copy the photos and send them in too to protect yourself. They are difficult to see at night for sure!!!! |
