SCHENECTADY — Independent bookseller Janet Hutchison survived the onslaught of chain bookstores and Walmart, the advent of e-books and the brutal price advantage of online seller Amazon.
But she could not hold back the advancing years.
"I've reached a certain age. It's time," said Hutchison, 67, owner of The Open Door Bookstore on Jay Street. She announced her retirement Thursday and is seeking a buyer for the bookstore and attached gift shop. It's been a mainstay for the past 40 years on a downtown pedestrian strip of eclectic shops and eateries that has endured a cycle of prosperity and penury. I hope she does find a buyer. Open-door has been one of the only good things about downtown for a long time and one of the few reasons I myself ever go down there even now. It's always been part of "date" days with my kids.
She should clearly have no problem finding a buyer since the business has a long standing record of success......yes?
Actually.....she probably has or had a buyer as I'm sure she didn't decide to retire yesterday.....yes?
