SCHENECTADY — The latest U.S. census figures show an alarming statistic — 50.8 percent of Schenectady's children reportedly live below the poverty line.

For a family of four, that means a yearly income of less than $22,350. That number, provided as part of the 2011 American Community Survey, puts Schenectady 13th in the nation for highest childhood poverty rate among cities over 65,000 in population, behind Syracuse and Rochester — which ranked in the top 10. Albany, the only other local city surveyed, ranked 91st.

For about the last five years, Schenectady's leaders have touted the city's rebirth, as empty storefronts downtown have been replaced by restaurants and businesses that complement the renovated and expanded Proctors Theatre. But celebration over State Street's success, along with General Electric Co.'s renewed commitment to its birthplace with 350 jobs at its new battery plant, overlooks a harsher reality — that life is getting worse for Schenectady's poor only a few block's beyond the city's showpiece.

Schenectady:   Number 1 in highest taxes, Number 1 in highest crime, Number 1 in falling property values, Number 1 in unemployment.   Number 1 in poverty rate.   Oh, DON'T be comparing Schenectady with Syracuse and Rochester -- they are far far bigger cities.

What have the dems accomplished in the city?   Where is this renaissance?   What is getting better in the city?    Can any cheerleaders for the  city answer the question about what is better now than a few years ago?   Oh, downtown is nice looking buildings today instead of previous to the dems take over?   Well, tell us what downtown reno has done to:   the tax base, the tax BILLS, the home values, the number of people trying to sell their homes in order to get the hell out of the city, the number of houses that are selling, the desirability to live IN the city, the crime rate, the unemployment, the good paying jobs, the poverty?

Well?????   So, any cheerleaders for metroplex, the dems, and the wild uncontrolled spending on downtown want to respond and tell us what the results have been thanks to the downtown reno?

Of course, we will NOT get an answer from any cheerleaders

The Mayor's final statement in the TU article pretty much sums him up.

And here is the quote (for those that don't want to read the story)

Quoted Text
"We still have a long way to go," the mayor said. "But I don't believe we're continuing to decline."

So, the DRASTIC reduction in the tax base is not a decline
Plummeting home values are not a decline
Houses not selling, even after substantial reductions in asking price and six months on the market is not a decline
Crime going up is not a decline
Reduced graduation rates are not a decline
People fleeing the city is not a decline
People not wanting to buy a house in the city is not a decline
$5 million in the red in one year only is not a decline
Drastic increase in vacancies in residential units (regardless of whether "unit" is a one family house, a unit in a condo, an apartment of any side) is not a decline
Massive foreclosures is not a decline.
No retail businesses moving to the city is not a delcline

Is McCarthy blind?   Or is he on drugs?

Absolutely disgusting. SCHENECTADY 13th HIGHEST IN THE NATION in childhood poverty. Some of the DEM
cheer leaders/morons need to volunteer a day down at the slammed food pantry. Then they will see the fruits of their labor. The State must take over and establish a control board before McCheese and his idiots do any more permanent damage. They are pulling the whole County down the sewer. That they run.

BTW, Albany another Northeast City is number 91 on the child poverty list. While Fat Morris and Death Ray draw
bloated salaries for picking the carcasses of the remaining County property owners. Where are the 5,000 jobs lying
McCheese said he created? The City garage, pollution plant,,,full stop.

There's a great renaissance at the food pantry. That's it after 12 years of Metrograft.

Maybe if they gave more raises to Death Ray and Chris Gardner things would get better. Oooops, they did.
