SCHENECTADY — A 43-year-old man died Friday night after he was shot several times in the city's Hamilton Hill neighborhood, police said.
Police had a suspect in custody just 30 minutes after the shooting, Sgt. Adriel Linyear said.
Terell Bethea, 28, was charged with second-degree murder, second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property.
Linyear said the gun police recovered in the crime was reported stolen from Vermont in 2006.
The shooting happened just before 2:30 p.m. near 425 Schenectady St.
Police have not released the name of the victim, who was treated at the scene by city firefighters before being taken to the Nott Street campus of Ellis Hospital.
On Friday night, Schenectady Police had one suspect in custody, and a 40-year-old city man had died after a broad daylight shooting in Hamilton Hill.
At around 8 p.m. Schenectady Police announced they had recovered a weapon.
At 5 p.m., crime scene tape still lined Schenectady Street, personal belongings were strewn all around, and detectives collected a bloody shirt as evidence.
It was all part of the aftermath of a 2 p.m. shooting that happened right by the side of the road on the busy street.
Neighbor Kathryn Voight said, "It's pretty scary, I mean, especially when you have kids, you know? Bullets have no names, so, I mean, it could happen to anybody."
Schenectady resident Willie Reese says was at home when he heard a loud argument outside.
Reese said, "It got heated up. The argument got heated up, and then what happened, the big guy that got shot said, 'You ain't gonna do nothing to me!' And that's when I heard the shots. I live on the other corner there, but I heard the argument, that's when I came in my house."
Police say the victim, Reese's neighbor and friend, was shot multiple times. Reese identified the man only as "Truck."
Reese said, "His eyes were closed. I think they were trying to get him to breathe at the time."
Schenectady Police say the victim then underwent surgery at Ellis Hospital, and had to be transported to Albany Medical Center for more care. Police told FOX23 News he died from his injuries later Friday night.
Voight said, "It's kind of scary because I've heard of a few things going down over here. So I try to not really come through here too much."
Both neighbors said they are careful about when they go out.
Voight said, "I really stay in the house, so I try not to be outside so much."
Reese said, "I don't walk around through here at night, only in the daytime. I know better."
The suspect is expected to be arraigned Saturday morning.
So within a few days we have the fire on Paige St. (arson or accidental?) a fire on Hullet st. which I see nothing on the news about and I come home yesterday to see most of the street taped off and a man is dead.
I wish the news did not report the witness's names.

Chaires himself told me the police were aware of the probems in Jerry Burell Park but did NOTHING.

Why do they do NOTHING to curb the violence?

I see the young kids around here with NO parent supervision, and these kids see the violence and it's nothing to them, so they are also starting out young, with "minor crimes" because the parents DON"T care.
What will be the weapon of choice next week? A knife, a gun ?
And some whine about more gun control, they want to take away the law abiding citizens right to bear arms, while the criminals will get them NO MATTER WHAT.

Around midnight or so, I was out in my yard with my dogs,heard the all too familiar pop pop of gunshots. Turned out it was a drive-by over on Elm St, shot out some windows in the 200 block. Also last night at least a couple of large brawls involving 15 + people. Another busy night, 7 days a week. Some of the stuff would be comical if it weren't so pathetic.
And there is money for narrowing Erie Blvd, there is money for a gold ceiling at Proctors which does not pay taxes, there is money to give to Paris Hilton's family and to Paul Mitchell, and to the local millionaire Mallozzi family,
But there is no money for the neighborhoods.
How is it a renaissance when taxes go up, tax base goes down, no one wants to buy a house in the city.
How are the dem leaders good when they spend money on downtown when the residents can't even go out of their homes? Too bad the cheerleader(s) for the city dems won't answer why it's better to spend money on downtown rather than for the neighborhoods.

Well said! I have also been amazed at the little kids riding their bikes all over the neighborhoods on the Hill at 10 pm. Their parents are no where to be found. Not a cop in sight.
Would be nice if someone would take an interest in the welfare of our City.

visitor would like to hear your solutions as we see less and less of a police presence here on Hamilton Hill, UNLESS someone is shot and then it's too late. Or are they too busy looking for someone smoking in a city park
I think a solution would be to bring back the state police in force and go after the REAL criminals.
I think a solution would be for the police to realize that homeowners on the hill and in Mt. Pleasant are supposed to be treated with the same respect that is supposed to be given to every homeowner in the city. And that crimes that happen here are JUST AS UPSETTING and stressful as a crime that happens downtown.

rforpres - Well, I cannot question the sincerity or accuracy of most of your post. Although they do devote a lot of resources to that part of Schenectady Street, I know the police are not satisfied with the results. One of the major sources of the problem there is marijuana, more specifically, how goverment addresses the problem. The penalties for mj selling are minimal, the profits significant. Because of that, the sellers of MJ face the choice of making a lot of money with very little sanctions. If the police catch someone in the act of selling mj, they probably have enough money in their pocket, to bail themselves out. Is selling mj violent, in and of itself? No. But, it creates an atmosphere of lawlessness and diminshes the quality of life. Were it not for the mj selling on that street, the street would not attract a lot of the udnesirable element.
Suggested answer, the legislature has two choices, both related to changing the existing laws - (1) Make the penalties more severe for open air dealing, especially near a park or other area where children are (e..g,. schools, youth centers). (2) Legalize it and take the profit out of it.
The other part of the solution has to do with the children in the area - that area has more programs for kids than anywhere else in the City. Invest more in the Arts Center, Boys and Girls Club, Carver Center - attract more kids and keep them occupied in enrichment activities.

You can legislate good parenting. If you want the government to step in.....then it should be CPS.....yes? Or perhaps they should enforce a curfew.
On the flip side.......it appears that the powers that be in the city are keeping the 'undesirables' right where they want them.....Hamilton Hill & Mt. Pleasant. If they really wanted to patrol both of those areas.......they KNOW that the scum will just move to another part of the city. So they obviously prefer to keep them right where they are now.
There are also many properties in those areas that are owned by rich folks from downstate. Some of those folks have owned these properties for a decade and have physically seen it....once or twice....FACT!!!
Unless they change the all over welfare package for the county.........and REALLY come down on these rich slum lords........it will stay as it is.
