Schenectady County Community College is seeking bids for a construction manager to build 3,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space on the ground level of Elston Hall.
The project includes a cafe with wireless capabilities, convenience store, storage, restrooms, office, outdoor patio and new sidewalk.
Elston Hall is located at the eastern end of campus with an entrance on Washington Avenue. It also houses the Casola dining room, student bookstore, student commons and most of the school’s administrative offices. The area planned for the cafe was formerly the faculty lounge.
The circa-1925 building, the former Van Curler Hotel, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Denise Murphy McGraw, chairwoman of the school's board of trustees, said the new area is part of the school's ongoing expansion efforts. The college opened its first student housing, the 264-unit College Suites at Washington Square in September, and is adding programs at its downtown campus and recently purchased additional property downtown.
"It shows that our campus continues to grow," she said.
The two-year college in upstate New York in August retained Envision Architects of Albany to design the project. The work is being funded through the SCCC Faculty Student Association.
Proposals are due by 2 p.m. Oct. 10. A contract will be awarded by the end of the month.
Prospective bidders are required to attend a pre-proposal conference scheduled for 9 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 4 in the student commons in Elston Hall.
