They also asked the public to name their top 10 presidents...with Jimmy Carter and GHW Bush in the public's list, I wonder if they thought they were being asked what presidents can you remember or what presidents do you like personally? because their list doesn't make sense otherwise...

As far as the Historians, the only two I think don't belong in the top ten are LBJ and Eisenhower. Eisenhower didn't really do much other than watch the autopilot..and between LBJ's great society programs and escalating Vietnam pretty much should remove him from the list as well.

May I refer you to a book just out by Dennis Gaffney about the Presidents.  It is quite good.

Incidentally Carter has had the best POST presidency of everyone.  He has been quite amazing.

I agree Yossi. Carter may not have had a stellar presidency, but he's set a standard for what it means
to be an effective ex US President.  He's helped eliminate disease through his Carter Foundation and
he's certified election results in growing democracies validating the results of those elections to prevent
election fraud.

Bill Clinton since leaving office, has been active politically as a Democrat spokesman for his party.
  Bill Clinton and George HW Bush became friends working together on  tsunami relief in Asia.

I would have to disagree with your assessment of George W Bush.  While he may not have been among the best, he should at least appear in the "middle of the pack" of any presidential rankings.

Mr. Carter and Mr. Obama should rank at the bottom for their abysmal handling of the nation's economy, their inability to work with Congress (even when both houses were in their own party's hands - 4 years for Carter and 2 years for Obama) --- and most importantly for their horrendous handling of foreign policy.  In both cases, it is obvious that they SOLD OUT our nation and our nation's allies while strengthening the hand of our nation and our nation's allies enemies.  

President Madison should be near the bottom along with Carter, Obama and some of the 19th century presidents.

I would say that Ronald Reagan (except for the botched Social Security deal with Tip O'Neil) and both Roosevelts should rank in the top 10.  

Richard Nixon and Lyndon Johnson should at least be 10th or close to that top rank.

Actually Carter didn't do that bad.  He finished 25th, behind Gerald Ford, and ahead of Richard Nixon.
