Niskayuna teen taken into custody

By Cathleen F. Crowley
Updated 11:49 p.m., Monday, September 10, 2012

NISKAYUNA — Police cordoned off a cul-de-sac for hours on Monday while trying to talk a distraught teenager out of his house.

Police and SWAT teams surrounded a home in the 800 block of Cunningham Court while the boy's family members waited two blocks away on the corner of Oregon Avenue and Eastern Parkway. The incident started around 4 p.m. and police took the young man into custody around 11 p.m., according to neighbors. No injuries were reported.

Several neighbors who had been at work were not able to get into their homes because police closed Eastern Avenue from Oregon to Daisy Lane.

Police refused to release any information.

The teenager had been expelled from school last year after being accused of robbing another student at knifepoint. He returned to school this year, only to be suspended on the first day of classes.

Shawn Shafran said he was good friends with the teen and said he was a good kid. They like working on cars together and plan to open a repair shop after graduation.

"I was beyond surprised that this is happening tonight," he said.

"good friends with the teen and said he was a good kid."

I often see this phrase, "he/she was a good kid", attached to a tragedy involving young people and it does perplex me. Ie; A teen crashes a vehicle killing their passengers, and the teen was been found to have been drinking and speeding, but "he/she was a good kid". A teen murders someone, "he/she was a good kid, and we don't know how this happened" said teen is later found to have a police record as long as their arm, but "they were good kids", and the list goes on and on. Just once I would like to hear "He/she was a rotten, evil person, and there can be no punishment strong enough to fit the crime they've committed." Really just once.

I'm not disputing the idea that some teenage tragedies are indeed just that, tragedies. I'm sorry though, you will never convince me that just because a tragedy involves a young person we must assume that they were, "good kids". And with that I'll step down from my soapbox.

"While Foreign Terrorists were plotting to murder and maim using homemade bombs in Boston, Democrap officials in Washington DC, Albany and here were busy watching ME and other law abiding American Citizens who are gun owners and taxpayers, in an effort to blame the nation's lack of security on US so that they could have a political scapegoat."

A standoff in Niskayuna forces police to close down roads and evacuate a neighborhood for several hours, now a teenager has been arrested.
It all started Monday afternoon just before 4 p.m., when Niskayuna Police responded to an armed suspect in a home on Cunningham Court.

Police say James Catuccio, 16, was threatening to harm himself and shoot at police if he was confronted.

A female was in the home at the time, but was released several hours later.

After hours of negotiations, Catuccio was taken into custody at 11 p.m. and is currently being held by the Schenectady County Sheriff without bail.

He faces felony weapons charges and is expected in court on Wednesday.

Just wondering as he was suicidal shouldn't he be in a hospital for evaluations?
