9/11 memorial to cost $60 million a year to operate
$12 million a year at NYC site just for security due to terrorism fears

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/48960348/ns/us_news-security/#

I find it hard to wrap my mind around this. The article states that the USS Arizona Monument costs $3.6 million to maintain, and Arlington Cemetary $45 million annually. The loss of life is a terrible thing and I have nothing against a memorial, but let's get real. $60 million seems over the top. This is just my opinion.

That's a rather unique point of view. A little disconcerting I might add.

Sorry, you probably don't follow my posts.  I should have added a TIC.

I would love to see the specifics on this one and how every dollar will be spent, that is just a insane amount of money.

Thank you for the clarification. I thought that may be the case, but was reluctant to look foolish as I've just begun my time here. So we'll go back to square one.

I still do think it's a ludicrous amount of money to be spent on a memorial. There are days when I question the whole idea of a memorial in general. We see them every day. On the side of the road to memorialize a victim of a traffic accident. On a street corner to memorialize a victim of street crime. There are some memorials on the sides of road that are maintained to some degree year round. To what purpose.

Once again I do suppose they serve some purpose, so I'm not against memorials per se, it's the expenditure of $60 million dollars a year that concerns me. I must confess that I think we've misplaced our values and priorities.

The article states I believe that $12 million is for security and anti-terrorism alone. Yes Henry you're right, insane amount of money indeed.

Seriously.
The Arizona memorial, is considered to be a national park, and is much more complex than you would think.
Arlington? Well that's an awful lot of land to maintain.
But 9/11? It's a damned fountain, and small museum.

I remember when JFK was buried, and people were whining about the ongoing cost of "The Eternal Flame".

From the article:

"Just operating the two massive fountains that mark the spots where the twin towers once stood will cost another $4.5 million to $5 million annually, said the foundation's spokesman, Michael Frazier."

That's what I don't get, what type of security cost $12 million per year and what does that include, will they install surface to air missiles

Perhaps the sidewalks open up to reveal tanks and armored personnel carriers with an elite army of anti-terrorism shock troops. Mean while the fountains themselves turn into acid spewing streams of death.

this memorial can be used for multiple generations to elicit all kinds of podium jingles to promote things like

HOMELAND SECURITY
PATRIOT ACT
PRE-EMPTIVE ANYTHING AT ALL
THEY PISSED US OFF
THEY ARE DIFFERENT
WE SHOULD BE IN CHARGE OF THAT

ETC ETC....

let's hear it for historical monuments and their COMPLETELY lost meanings
