Schenectady councilwoman hospitalized
By Lauren Stanforth
Published 6:08 p.m., Sunday, September 2, 2012

SCHENECTADY — City Councilwoman Barbara Blanchard has been hospitalized.

Various city Democratic leaders confirmed Sunday that Blanchard is in the hospital, but said her family wants any details about her condition to remain private. A call to her home was not returned Sunday.

The 64-year-old Democrat has been using a wheelchair to get to and from city meetings for at least the last year. But even some who work closely with her do not know the nature of her health condition.

Of course respecting the request for privacy re a medical issue is appropriate.  I thought I remember she had MS or MD, but I may be wrong.   Prayers going out to her, even though she helps spend the tax money

Hope she is ok. "if" it is multiple sclerosis could be an exacberation in which they give IV steroids.

I've talked to her a few times this year and never asked what was wrong, she does know I have MS, I just ask her how she is doing.

We too wish her well.   If for some reason she cannot fulfill her term, wonder if an appointment is in the mix.   Say Mr.Mooterveran who was passed over for Ms.Porterfield?

Progressive illness puts Schenectady councilwoman on sidelines
Wednesday, September 5, 2012
By Kathleen Moore (Contact)
Gazette Reporter

SCHENECTADY — City Councilwoman Barbara Blanchard, who has a progressive neurological illness, has been hospitalized.

Blanchard has been fighting the illness since at least 2009, when she was forced to begin using a walker. Later, as symptoms progressed in an illness she has not publicly identified, she began using a temporary wheelchair, and recently bought her own wheelchair.

But until last week, she remained active on the City Council and in running the Schenectady Greenmarket, as well as taking vacations and other trips.

Early last Wednesday morning, however, she was taken to Ellis Hospital, where she spent six days, though not in the Intensive Care Unit, and then was transferred to Sunnyview Rehabilitation Hospital on Monday.

“That’s a big step,” said her husband, Art Edelstein. “It’s too soon to know what course this will take.”

He asked the public to wait a week or two for things to become more clear.

“I really don’t want people to come see her so she can focus on getting better,” he said.

Edelstein noted that Blanchard has chosen not to discuss her health publicly, but he said he didn’t think it would be fair to the many people concerned about her to simply say her health was a private matter.

“The family is well aware that people are concerned with her welfare, and the family appreciates the support,” he said.

But there’s not much people can do, he added. Her illness has worsened slowly for years, despite the efforts of many doctors.

Yep, I do smell another council seat not chosen by the residents, but rather there will be another dem crony political hack puppet appointment.

Wonder if DV aka Glry aka mama Ginny will be doing some brown-nosing.   Oh wait, he barely will put his pinky toe IN the city, therefore even renting IN the city is totally out of the question

I would seem to me, due to the nature of her "progressive illness", that she is already at that crossroads. As a side note, I have noticed over the past few months, that her speech was becoming more and more labored. Sad indeed.

Thinking no matter how anyone feels about her politically this would be the thread to wish her well.

Not speculate on her replacement : (

Neurological illnesses affect many more people than some realize. MS, CRPS, etc - the sometimes hidden debilitating illness that nobody can understand unless you live with it.

I hope she's better (or at least back to semi-normal activity) soon
