Editorial on SCCC fence was too quick to criticize

Your Aug. 28 editorial, “Still no action on SCCC jaywalking,” is a case of shoot first and ask questions later on the part of the Gazette’s editorial writers.
While they were busy writing an editorial, county, city and SCCC [Schenectady County Community College] officials were moving forward with plans for a curbside fence along Washington Avenue from the new dorm exit to the corner of State Street and Washington Avenue.
The fence and temporary barriers to close Water Street have been in the works for some time and will be installed before classes begin at the college [they were installed Friday]. Meanwhile, the city and Metroplex are working with the state on a more permanent solution — a barrier along the Washington Avenue median.
Editorials reflect a newspaper’s opinion and that’s fine, but editorials are supposed to be based on facts and when they aren’t, that’s not OK. Gazette readers and the civil servants working to ensure the safety of SCCC students both deserve better from their local newspaper.

    GARY HUGHES
Schenectady The writer is a county legislator.
Editor’s note: The editorial was written before the temporary solution was announced the evening of Aug. 27, and after a conversation with Mayor Gary McCarthy about the safety issue in which he made no mention of it. The temporary solution was agreed to after that conversation, according to McCarthy.

Why the HECK is Metroplex involved with this??????!!!!!!

If SCCC decides to be STUPID enough to not build some sort of over-the-traffic bridge from the dorms to the college...well...that's their fault.

With the recent death of one of their students crossing Erie, you would think that one of the remaining functioning brain-cells of an SCCC Administrator would have considered the safety of the students first.

Well SCCC, has set up their dorms next to an apartment house of over a half-dozen sex offenders. Wonder if any of the students know that??

Sorry, but the building located at 2 Fuller Street in back of the new SCCC dorms houses the following:

Apartment 1: Level 3 sex offender
Apartment 2: Level 3 sex offender
Apartment 3: Level 2 sex offender
Apartment 5: Level 2 sex offender
Apartment 6: Level 3 sex offender
Apartment 7: Level 2 sex offender
Apartment 11: Level 2 sex offender
Apartment 12: Level 2 sex offender
Apartment 13: Level 3 sex offender
Apartment 14: Level 2 sex offender
Apartment 15: Level 3 sex offender
Apartment 16: Level 3 sex offender
Unknown Apartment: Level 3 sex offender

That's 13 sex offenders who live next to the SCCC dorms. Crossing the street is the least of these students worries!

I wonder why the media (and I don't consider the DG "media") haven't picked up on this.  Maybe they'll see this story and run with it.

Looks like Gary Hughes (the pygmy legislator) put the chickens INTO the Fox-House!

"While Foreign Terrorists were plotting to murder and maim using homemade bombs in Boston, Democrap officials in Washington DC, Albany and here were busy watching ME and other law abiding American Citizens who are gun owners and taxpayers, in an effort to blame the nation's lack of security on US so that they could have a political scapegoat."

Why not just write a few tickets for jaywalking.

Might have something to do with monitoring.   It probably is better for the authorities who are in charge of these things, to keep them in one general centralized area rather than scattered about.    Since the Plex has been instrumental in the eventual removal of the eyesore(at least to the Plex) of the YMCA clientle, will they be involved to rid this habitat if it becomes an issue to the college/dorms success?   And the nightclub next door as well with it's issues.   Is there a requirement that the surrounding neighbors are to be notified of sex offenders in their midst?   Anyone?

I agree Mr. Majestyk, I'm just surprised that they were corralled into one building, almost like  the old leper colonies and this hasn't attracted attention.

The economic engine drivers who have a heavy investment/interest in that area would not deem this as positive attention.   Would be a detraction/distraction to the end goal.   IMHO.

On the brighter side, 2 Fuller St probably has some great parties.

Lol.
