SCHENECTADY – The City Council Monday night passed a smoking ban in city parks and playgrounds. In a separate council matter, tax bills for several of the city's nonprofits remain in limbo.
The council voted 6-0 in favor of the smoking ban, with one council member abstaining.
Councilman Vincent Riggi said he could not cast an unbiased vote because two of his sisters died from lung cancer at ages 46 and 56.

People should just use common sense, they shouldn't smoke near the tot lots or the playgrounds but for the whole park give me a break. Tobacco should be the last thing they should be worried about when I find bullets, needles, condoms, drug bags, beer cans thrown about in our parks.

But can you imagine the bullets flying and the police dept gets a call, "Hi I'm in the park walking my dog and there's someone on the other side of the lake who is smoking"
I also have to give credit to the great Councilman Riggi, the ONE councilman who DOES represent the residents and taxpayers. He felt he could not be unbiased abstained.
Now, why does that Proctor's employee who gets paid with taxpayer money, never abstain when it come to the use of the taxpayer money on downtown? That IS a MAJOR ETHICS issue! She should NOT even be on the council because she doesn't care about the residents, she ONLY cares about her precious gold ceiling funded by the taxpayers

If the car is running, it could, especially if you're standing next to it inside a small enclosed structure. And it'll do it a lot quicker than cigarettes.

I agree. Car exhaust and Cigarette smoke do have a lot in common and both should be regulated to a "Parking Area" for cars, and a designated "Hack Up A Lung" area for smokers. Preferably away from anything that breathes.

The pool, lake, and playground equipment can also be dangerous to our kids if used improperly, should we stop those as well. Again people should just use common sense, if there is kids all over don't light up or just go to your car and smoke. Banning it will not stop it just like banning drugs didn't stop people from shooting up heroine in our parks. Also who is going to enforce this, our police who can't even stop the laws on the books already, yeah right.

blah...blah...blah...Heard it a million times. Not going through it again...You must never have had any children or the ultrasound machine wasn't invented yet. 8 months gestation for a HUMAN BEING doesn't resemble a chicken yolk. You may eat 8 month human fetus' for breakfast, not me.
