restaurant in sch'dy. Must be their tax fee exemption ran out in albany

The Mallozzi Group has closed its elegantly styled Brown Derby in Albany’s theater district to open a casual Italian restaurant in an area of downtown Schenectady that is rebounding after decades of deterioration and neglect.

The new restaurant is a mid-priced venue that will be named “Johnny’s.” It is scheduled to open in four months in Center City, a 212,000-square-foot complex of retail and office space on State Street in Schenectady’s central business district.

Johnny’s will occupy 6,000 square feet on the first floor beneath space used by Schenectady County Community College for off-campus classrooms.

Absolutely no conflict of interest here.

Board member of Metroplex gets prime location.

How much was his grant?

How many years before he will pay taxes?

Did he write himself a loan for a million to build the business?

That's right, Mallozzis will be making more money and not doing a damn thing for the financially struggling homeowners in the city.   More STEALING from the homeowners.  More tax exemptions for the for-profit business.

Gee, two Itallian restaurants that do not pay taxes that DV can stuff himself.  But gee, how come Mallozzi's will get there open in four months and DV's tax delinquent buddy RL is not even near ready?

Maybe it will only be one non-taxpaying Italian restaurant

Why bother competing and paying taxes in Albany? Come to McCheeseville where the connected paying nuthin and never pay nuthin. Open ended tax exemptions for the friends and family crew. No wonder the City is $10 MILLION in the red with over $100 MILLION in indebtedness. Audit! Audit!

Former Assemblywoman and Lt. Governor Mary Anne Krupsak opened restaurant in Center City about 30 years ago.  I recall patronizing it once or maybe twice in the short time that it was opened.  While I can't much else about it (quality of food and service), I do remember that it was seriously hampered by that location and thus closed.

It is not that there are not surface parking lots downtown - but they fill up quickly and quite honestly ..most people who want to go out to eat will drive to a restaurant in the neighborhoods or suburbs that have ample parking near to the front door (especially now that folks are older and have to consider the needs of handicapped or disabled relatives).  Limited parking which is convenient for handicapped persons was one of the reasons that my family never patronized the Brown Derby in Albany.

Long story short, I wish the Mallozzi's well in this new venture but I am not convinced that it is a good location for a restaurant.

This is another attempt to gather any last dollar that may be spent downtown by the SCCC students.......  Like the Proctors owned coffee shop.

It's a good location if you don't have to pay rent, electric, water, garbage and all the other perks I'm sure will be provided with the taxpayers money disguised as a Metroplex 'grant'.

Kinda' ironic that a smaller Walmart (the first of its kind in NY State) is coming to Niskyuna, Trader Joes just opened  and no one can figure out that some sort of grocery store could actually BRING PEOPLE to Downtown....with all that free parking and all.

Schenectady has become the cheap whore for a selected few who pimp their goods on every corner.

    Reporter- The Business Review

The Mallozzi Group will open a casual Italian restaurant called "Johnny's" in Center City, across from Proctors theatre in downtown Schenectady, New York.

The Rotterdam-based restaurant company plans an early December opening for its newest venue. It will employ 25 people. Center City is owned by The Galesi Group of Rotterdam.

Johnny's, named for John Mallozzi, a Mallozzi Group co-owner and graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, will have outdoor dining on the patio and porch.

The Mallozzis also own Mallozzi's Ballroom & Catering, Treviso, Villa Italia Pasticceria, and Belvedere Hotel, and operate food services at Western Turnpike Golf Course and the Colonie Golf and Country Club in Voorheesville.

Mallozzi's Brown Derby restaurant in Albany closes tomorrow, Aug. 25, after four years in operation. Bobby Mallozzi, another Mallozzi Group co-owner, said the family decided to shut down the fine-dining establishment after a number of menu, management and pricing transformations failed to attract a broader audience to the elegant venue.

"It never found its identity," he said. The employees were offered jobs at other Mallozzi operations.

The Mallozzi Group will invite students from Schenectady County Community College's culinary program to apply for jobs at Johnny’s. SCCC has a downtown campus at Center City, in space above where Johnny's is scheduled to open.

Allen covers education, restaurants, transportation and nonprofits.
