Last week, Michael Payless, 33, sat watching television in his home with two of his children. Then, in a split second, he was dead from the bullet of a gun. Behind the trigger -- his 3-year-old son.
According to police, the boy found a loaded handgun lying nearby, and picked it up, and accidentally discharged it. His father was pronounced dead at the scene.
The story is so heartbreaking on so many levels. For the children who lost their father, and for their mother who lost her husband and will now be faced to raise her children alone. But mostly I ache for this 3-year-old boy. How do you live your life knowing that you shot your own father?

Sure, he'll be told it was an accident, that it wasn't his fault. But will he ever truly be able to accept that and move on? I hope so. I hope he -- and his entire family -- get the kind of support and counseling they need to deal with such a tragedy.
Perhaps most heartbreaking of all, however, is how easily all of this could have been avoided -- if only a loaded gun hadn't been lying around. There are few details, and it's not clear whose gun it was or why it was in the home, but I can't think of any explanation that would justify it.
Nothing can undo this tragedy now, but others can learn from it. I'm not someone who seeks to ban guns, but with the right to bear arms comes the incredible responsibility to treat them with the utmost care, and never ever put them anywhere a child could potentially get a hold of them. Ever.
Currently when applying for a concealed weapon license, they encourage the applicant to get the spouse to be one of the character references for the applicant, since the spouse will have to share the home with the applicant.
I think that this is a good policy.
I'm sure the NRA disagrees, and would never exist, if all the members needed permission from their wives to buy a gun.
I'll name this policy: The Family That Buys Together, May Die Together policy.
Ranch style homes should be the only homes approved by the state. Two story buildings should be banned.

I would have never said that. I mean really. The truth is right there in the story. The ban that is needed? 3 year olds. All children should be required to be born at the age of 16, and be given a drivers license instead of a birth certificate. It's obvious that birth certificates are overrated anyways.
This guy should obviously be receiving, posthumously, a Darwin Award for leaving his gun sitting around, fully loaded and unlocked, where a 3 year old could play with it, and the son should receive a letter of recongition from the Awards committee for doing what the father was even too stupid to follow through on himself. Also, think of how much tax money would be saved over the years of not paying for all the benefits that this guy would mooch off the system.
In 2008 88 kids were killed in the USA under age 5 by guns. In 2009 it was 85.
5,740 Children and Teens were Killed by Guns in 2008 and 2009. The subject of this thread, where kids, even toddlers have access to guns is not unusual in the USA and is part of the price we pay for our "2nd amendment mentality". Anyone who'd allow a 5 year old access to guns should be locked up as a danger to society.
