Why didn't we get a warning from the governor the last time we were under a tornado watch/warning? The national weather service handles severe weather notifications the governor declares states of emergencies when it happens.

Read VERY CAREFULLY --- the National Weather Service's storm prediction center notified the Governor and the public yesterday that conditions were ripe for  VERY DANGEROUS STORMS -- not just typical summer thunderstorms -- but the type of storms that produce tornadoes and damaging straight line winds.   They recommended that the Governor and the state prepare to respond to significant damaging storms.

The FACT is that a tornado did hit Elmira and there was the possibility of another in Orange County.  And last I checked Elmira in Chemung County  and Orange County were still in the State of New York.  Oh -- and there has been some other damage and power outages in the Catskills and other parts of the state.

So the Governor - who is Governor of ALL the state and not just your backyard - was absolutely correct in having the state emergency center on alert and in making all of the other preparations to respond to these storms WHICH DID IN FACT CAUSE SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE IN PARTS OF THE STATE.

The NWS issues storm warning through the Emergency Broadcast System.  You know, that buzzing sound that comes over the radio or television set, followed by a voice alerting people of approaching storms.  It should have never been issued through the Governors office.  It was uneccessary fear mongering.  Thunderstorms have been doing significant damage since the beginning of time.  The line of storms that went though New York yesterday were no different than any other line of storms that go through New York State in July.

You need to read VERY CAREFULLY --- try to comprehend --- try to realize that YOU don't know all of the facts.
The National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center in Norman, OK   DIRECTLY CONTACTED the Governor's office to warn them that conditions were ripe for an outbreak of unusually severe storms which could include damaging straight line winds and tornadoes.  This was NOT a normal summer thunderstorm system.   It was NOT fear mongering.   The storm system was different from the normal line of storms that go through New York in July.  The FACT is that the storm produced at least one tornado (Elmira) and at several times during the day produced storms with rotation  (including one just south of the City of Saratoga) that were capable of producing tornadoes.   The worst of the weather occurred in the Southern Tier, Southern Catskill s and Lower Hudson Valley and in New York City --- in New York City one man was killed due to the storms.   And for the record all of those areas are IN NEW YORK STATE,      And also for the record, the governors of Pennsylvania and Connecticut were also contacted and took similar precautions as Governor Cuomo --- activating the state emergency management center, pre-positioning rescue and clean-up resources and issuing warning to the general public.

My comprehension is fine lumpy...Disagreeing with you about the proper use of the governor’s office to spread fear 24 hours prior to a thunderstorm isn't a comprehension problem.  Not only was the warning unnecessary fear mongering, the pre-positioning of rescue and clean-up resources was a waste of money.

BTW, it is not a FACT, the report was one POSSIBLE tornado.

People do not need to be conditioned to believe that the state government can protect you from being terrorized by weather.

Stop clamouring people...There is nothing to fear...It is called living.

I keep reading the word "FEAR" in this thread.  For me, if the warning came from the Gov or from the
Nat Weather Service makes little difference.  "FEAR" isn't involved.

A weather advisory is just that... it's INFORMATION.  Information to be used to plan your day or to take
precautions if the conditions warrant.  It's much the way I view a traffic advisory to avoid construction delays
or an accident.
I don't think that anyone is selling fear... just information.

The FACT is that the National Weather Service notified the governor  (along with the governors of at least two other states) to be prepared for an outbreak of the potential for  VERY DANGEROUS STORM CONDITIONS -- beyond the normal summer thunderstorm danger.   The governor of NY (and the governors of at least 2 neighboring states) took the RATIONAL and REASONABLE steps to activate the state's emergency command center, preposition resources to respond to the threat and give the public GOOD and REASONABLE warnings to be prepared.

IMHO -  those who criticize the governor's actions have nothing better to do with their lives than whine and complain.  Grow up and get over it.

Geez, if that's the case, then the fact that these apocalyptic storms crossed state lines, this warning should have come from the President of the United States. These storms were in federal jurisdiction.  Kind of like Arizona's immigration laws, the states don't have the right to issue interstate weather warnings.

You really don't think a warning issued from the governors office carries any more weight than a warning coming from the National Weather Service?  How about a weather warning issued by the Presdient of the United States, does a weather warning carry anymore weight coming from the president?

Well, at the end of the day, hopefully the governor learned his lesson to not predict weather and alarm New Yorkers from the governors office.  He would be smart to leave it to the NWS, because when the predictions are wrong, they get the blame.  The NWS made Cuomo look silly.

(They found Cic's body in a tree on the 7th fairway...cell phone in hand... Right middle finger still raised
in defiance.)

Those are the choice huh?  Quite drastic wouldn't you say?

I'm not anti-government, I'm pro-individual and pro-freedom...And that's pro-freedom, NOT PRO-FREE-DUMB.

You support government and all the FREE-DUMB they have to offer.  And you regurgitate it and spread the FREE-DUMB.

This conversation with Cicero always goes in a circle... He posts above...
I prove him wrong when I post:

Oh, "I'm pro-individual and pro-freedom"... too. I believe in Freedom of the Individual to Choose...
and the spiral continues downward.

Clearly Cicero considers himself to be PRO INDIVIDUAL, and PRO FREEDOM, but his anti choice agenda
proves that he's not.

...accept to choose whether or not to buy health insurance.  That must be mandated in case you are injured by the tornado the governor warned about.
