Schenectady man accused of firing automatic weapon on bike path July 4, 2012 Updated 10:59 p.m.
SCHENECTADY — Police detained a man for questioning tonight after he allegedly fired an automatic weapon on the bike path in the vicinity of Clarendon Street. The incident happened around 8:30 p.m. Witnesses reported a man firing an assault rifle; a burst of automatic fire was audible a quarter-mile away on Maxon Road Extension. Officers responded to the area and found a suspect matching the description given, according to police spokesman Lt. Mark McCracken. A brief foot chase occurred, and the suspect ran into a house at 444-446 Manhattan St. That house remained on lockdown late tonight. “It appears that he has friends there or resides there,” he said. Police are still questioning individuals and charges had not been filed. McCracken said he did not know how many shots were fired, but shell casings were recovered at the scene. Police radio transmissions indicated about 20 casings were recovered. McCracken also said he did not know what the suspect’s intended target was. “At this time, we have no reasons to believe anybody was struck,” he said.
