senders - while ti it certainly is offensive that a person fired for misconduct gets a pension.  I know of no civilian who gets their 401 taken away because of a criminal sanction.

tib - lots of people who are dwi give little to no indication of intoxication.  if eh wanted to cover it up, all he had to do was report taht he had not made contact with the officer at his house.

Give you a little tidbit about the Curtis situation.  Everyone thought he was actinga  bit odd or different at times; however, people attributed it to some kind of breakdown or stress.  it wasn't so much they misjudged his behavior because he was a cop, rather he was one of those triathlete fitness devotees.  he was never even known as heavy drinker on the job.

So, if "everyone" thought it was a "breakdown or stress" - why was he still "on the job" and not behind a desk - or on forced time off?

He missed a lot of work due to an unrelated illness.  And, one of the dangers with those types of assignments is taht they are often not as visible within
the Department.  In fact, for taht erason and others, some agencies limit the amount of time a detective can be assigned to those types of units.

I just can't believe you came out and said everyone "attributed it to some kind of breakdown or stress" ... and NOTHING was done to limit him or his duties, even worse, that it was covered up for this long.

Being a bit sarcastic here, but you know it's what everyone's thinking anyway ...  So, he missed a lot of work for other medical reasons (illness) ... so a little more would have been what, too much time off to pad his pension / benefits?

Does your supervisor monitor these statements - or are they the "official" word of the department?

To this I respectfully say......BULLCRAP!!!!

Some kind of breakdown or stress??????????? Well which was it....a breakdown, stress, drugs? How about a medical, mental evaluation....coupled with some urine testing???? And missing a lot of work due to 'unrelated issues'???? And still allowed to carry a gun????? OMG!

I highly doubt that there is one person out there that actually believes that NOT ONE, TRAINED COP who is supposedly trained to spot drug behavior didn't know!!! Give me a break!! Parents are even trained to see the signs of drug use in their children. MY GOD.....they teach it in high school!! It's all over the internet!

NOPE....don't buy it! Cops knew, protected him and some are still on the force today! They didn't 'misjudge'...they covered up! And the MCMAYOR'S turned their head just to get the support/votes!! imo

I am pretty sure the employer doesn't continue to contribute to a civilian's 401K after being terminated for misconduct.  Police on the other hand, the taxpayer has to continue to contribute to the pension of the terminated officer as well as contributing to the cop that is hired to replace him/her.  The terminated civilian also has to "roll over" their 401K and pay the management fees, OR cash it out with a huge penalty charge.

Interesting twist - if they have their time in for retirement in and they are fired they lose their health insurance, if they retire they keep it.  Doesn't make sense, but that's what happens.

Cicero - I didn't say it was right just that the two are viewed differently, at least as far as public labor laws are concerned.
