Can we at least be consistent?
by Kathleen M. Gallagher

Yesterday the New York State Assembly  passed a bill that requires parental consent prior to the performance of body piercing on anyone under the age of 18. Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver said “it is important for a parent or guardian to be aware of all the potential risks associated with body piercing…” and the bill’s chief sponsor Assemblyman Michael Simanowitz (D – Queens) said his bill ”will ensure that parents are aware of their son or daughter’s intent to receive a body piercing to prevent complications such as allergic reactions, skin infections or scarring.”

The body piercing bill passed by a huge margin (133 to 3), with Democrats joining Republicans to protect children. Yet some of the same elected officials who voted for the bill — indeed, some of the same people who sponsor the bill – earlier in the week voted down a proposal to require parental notification prior to the performance of an abortion on anyone under the age of 18.  Do they not see the contradiction?  Do they not care about the complications, reactions, infections and scarring (both physical and emotional) that can result from the invasive surgery of abortion?  Do they not realize that while a nose ring can be removed, abortion cannot be undone, and the scars will linger? ......................>>>>...................>>>>.........................http://www.nyscatholic.org/2012/06/can-we-at-least-be-consistent/

The state needs to pick an age and stick to it.

The age when parental notification no longer exists for a medical procedure must surely be the age of full rights of citizenship.

Considering that under the Constitution a judicial waiver from parental notification rules must be granted when a minor is sufficiently mature to make medical decisions, and when an abortion is in the minor’s best interests, I believe the minor must declare themselves emancipated at that time before being allowed to receive treatment outside the law.

With emancipation voting rights, driving rights and other age required actions should be allowable as well.

You can't declare someone of age to make their own decisions and then continue to force them to follow the rules and laws against minors.

Either they are adults or children requiring parental notification and permission.

If they wish to be adults, grant them their full adult status and responsibilities.

At what age are parents still 'legally' responsible for their kids?
What age can they go into the service?
What age can they drink?
What age can they smoke?
What age can they tan and pierce?
What age can they be covered under their parent's health care?
What age when child support from divorce stops?
What age can they quit school without parental consent?
What age can they drive?
.....make up my mind!!!

You hit the nail on the head.

How can the government decide what age is appropriate for every child to become an adult.

This is clearly not the purpose of government. To make all age based decisions for every child without ever even meeting them.

Parents need to kick the government out of their family matters.

This thread was mis-titled. It should have been something like ' The Catholic Church and Man's Law'.

Why is the Catholic Church even concerned with NYS legislation?  The Church approves of the tanning and piecing law, but not the abortion law.  Shouldn't they be teaching their follower God's law and leave Man's law alone?  Haven't they learned their lesson after the birth control mandate?  I guess if the Catholic Church wants to exert political pressure to push their agenda using government force, they will learn that they will get burned when they are in the minority and the secular force their agenda onto the Church(women's birth control).

The church never ceases to exert control over the government.

The government never ceases to exert control of religious and family matters.

The government needs to exert some self control.

The church needs to shut up, and stay out of politics.

Is that what Jesus really had in mind?

Religious lobbyists seeking to make all law, follow church laws.

Just give them all blunts and joints.

Anything to keep their hands off the Altar Boys.  What is the age of parental notification for priest's to sodomize boys?  Buck, did Father notify your parents before blessing your holiest of holes?

That may be something the Catholic Church should be concerning themselves with.

I see what you did there. You were trying to be 'edgy' and 'witty'.

That's the problem with chronic stoners, dreaming to be something they are not.

That's the problem with the chronic Hannity viewer.  They are unable to critically think though an issue and debate it, so they reduce it to ad hominem attacks. What's next, calling me a 'pinhead'?  I'm a 'pinhead' and you are a 'patriot'.  That is the only level of debate your mind can process.

You're a GREAT AMERICAN Buck!

Studies show, chronic FOX NEWS causes intellectual impairment and leads to a warped reality that causes people to believe their authoritarian ideology is conservative.

well, we move closer to a police state under the guise of protecting children once again. When will we have a minimum age to eat unhealthy food? Seems like it is the next logical step.
